I used to use a Black & Decker Dustbuster, but they kept shorting out in the water

LoL - Well you should have just stuck your finger up......

Seriously - when I was 13 years of age, two friends and I hiked and cadged a lift from the old blitz that supplied the Double Island Point lighthouse and spent 8 days camping in the coloured sands a couple of miles south of the point. A cyclone arrived, we ran out of food, and had to live on those things for three days. I guess that we were lucky to find so many even though the waves were, most of the time, coming up to the sandhills. We had them raw, cooked on coals, boiled up for soup etc. etc., and since then I cannot even think about them without feeling ill.

My mate loves them - he does the fresh water trick and then cooks them on the barbie with bacon.

I use fresh sea water and change it once in 24hrs and this gets rid of the sand I have also thrown a handful of bran in and this clears their stomach.
I eat them in tomato sauce with pasta, with black bean and garlic, white wine butter parsley and garlic, on the bbq plate and eat them like peanuts with beer. One of the most under rated and easily accessed seafoods.

Whoops, you've thrown in Bran ? oh gawd, I hope Derryn Hynch isn't an Ausfish member, if he hears of this he will be on DI point doing the Kellogs all bran challenge with Pipis and beach fishermen !!

not allowed to eat them in NSW, not even allowed to yake them past 50m high tide mark

was told by an aboriginal mate when we were eating pippies cooked in damp sand tounge side down with the back end protruding with a small brush fire on top that the amount of sand is proportional to how close your teeth go together when chewing

i use fresh sea water and put in a weetbix. the sea water seems to keep them alive and filtering the weetbix in and the sand out . exellent in beer batter a bit messy and you can't cook them quick enough as everyones into them as soon as they come out of the fryer. make a thin batter just mix some plain flour and icy cold xxxx heavy and a few ice cubes use straight away dip pipi meat in flour then batter. cook about a minute in deep fryer. wash down with heaps of xxxx

put them in a dark room and in fresh water and then try steaming them as they open the steam sends the remaining sand to the bottom of the pot.
