Re: Heading to COOCHIN CREEK!!!! Jacks, Cod, Sharks?!
I haven't fished there much but a mate caught a mangrove jack at the entrance to the ck, on the sand flats. Using a small minnow.
I caught a few flathead (hoping for cod or something more romantic), but what was notable about those were that 2 of them were caught in a trib to the main ck, maybe mellum ck? It was brackish, almost freshish.
But the excitement I had there was I saw a shark fin cutting the water up about 25 meters behind the boat. About 4 hundred meters upstream from the camping ground.
I'd guess the shark was maybe 4/5 feet. But man was it strired up, really cutting up the surface, tight turns, thrashing about.
While all this was going on, I felt a "bump" on my lure like I'd never felt before. It happened a couple more times in quick order. I slowed down the crank, and leaned keenly over the side of the tinny, really peering into the water. Whatever was hitting the lure was fairly hard, as I'd get a decent bit of slack each time.
As the lure was getting closer, I tensed up even more, the lure closer, me tenser (is that a waord?), lure closer, me almost peeing myself, still a bump every now and then.
I was hoping to see a big cod shaddowing the lure as it came up out of the dark, but as I first caught a glipse of the red lure, the huge face of a really ugly toothy shark was right in my face. I mean I'm leaning over into the drink, and it's comming up out of the drink..
lol
I'm no hero that's for sure, and did I crap!
But the thing is, the other shark was still downstream 20 meters or so, doing it's thing.
so yeah there's sharks in there.
Another mate of mine reckoned he sent his two dogs into the water there one day and only one came out.
Have fun, wear steel waders or something though lol.
cheers
rob
Ps. I used to walk along the bank of mellum ck some years ago, and found a crop of about 200 marijuana plants there. It was a fair thrash through the scrub to that spot though.

live baits up around the camp ground should put you on to some jacks. plenty of good snag country up there. also met two old blokes who had caught half a dozen big queenies further down stream near the orchards on live gar fish.

Ran into a couple of young blokes up the back of Hussey last week end, one of them was rather excitedly waveing around a pic of an 18 kg cod he says he pulled off a snag up stream from the ramp in Coochin.
Looked like a nice fish
