Mate, you're not that far a drive from Jacob's Well so the Pin would be a good place to start. Plenty of water to explore and the wind would not be a problem, unlike the bay.

In the bay, I used to fish around Chain and Amity banks for shark, and the kids often pulled some good lizards on their light tackle there but grinners could be a problem as well as the weather.

    Good luck

    Hi mate.

    I never target flathead.

In saying that though, I've caught flatties up to 85cm.

The resaon is that Moreton Bay and surrounding creeks and rivers are full of them. They say 1.5-2.0m is the best depth, but My 85cm PB was caught in about 7-9m.

Basically you can catch them anywhere you go in the bay and surrounds. I have mainly caught them when using Pilchards on the old 3 gang hooks rig. drifting the bait to the bottom and either leaving it, or more often dragging the bait on, or just above the bottom.

Be aware that in Qld we have laws on not only the minimum size, but also the maximum. You can't keep anyhting above 50cm (I think - as I said, I never go after, or keep them). best to check.

Just try evrywhere you go and soon you'll figure out what sort of places they hide -remember they're an ambush predator, so think of places wher they would hide on the bottom to ambush smaller fish on the changing tides.

Good luck, and enjoy the new boat.

I've bought a 1990 Quintrex 4.35m about six months ago (first boat) and have never had more fun in my life...

That'd be 70cm max and a bigger minimum size for the dusky

40 cm minimum and 70 cm maximum for the dusky, which you can recognise by the black spot on the tail. Bag limit of 5. The dusky is the only large flathead we have, so any big one is a dusky. You will also catch quite a few bar-tailed flathead which have horizontal stripes on the tail, alternating black, yellow and white. Minimum size 30cm, no bag limit. Another small flathead, the sand flathead, is most commonly caught on surf beaches or very clean estuaries near the mouth. It is light brown and very finely speckled. Minimum length also 30cm, no bag limit. Because they are an ambush predator you have to go looking for them, so you can either drift to cover a lot of ground or cast and retrieve in likely situations. They love to lie near cover of some sort, so fish around the edges of weed beds, sandbanks, reefs, bridge pylons etc. A great fish in every way - one of my favourite targets, and great eating too.
