The Passage - Thursday AM
I headed up to Bribie early Thursday am hoping the northerly breezes might have blown off some of the weed and the forecast was for a very calm morning. I arrived around 3.30 am and fished around the mouth of Buckley’s hole with various GULPS. Had a few runs early but it was all a bit slow until the sun came up. There was also still plenty of weed washing around and clogging up the plastics. At around 5.00am I wandered along the sand banks towards Red Beach and about 200 metres south of Buckley’s Hole I got whacked by something fairly heavy that took off and then just bricked me – stopping completely still for a good ten seconds or so. Then with a tightened drag I got him moving and towed him back up the beach. He turned out to be a decent cod at 39 cm – 770 grams. I got him on a GULP 3” Shrimp in the New Penny colour. I have not been using the 3” Shrimps much as I cannot see how Berkley justify charging so much more for them than the regular packs.
I wandered back to the mouth of the lagoon at Buckley’s Hole where I picked up a 35cm Flathead on the good old GULP Pumpkinseed 3”Minnow Grub. I let him go and carried on with the 2” Shrimp and got a few Fingermark Bream – all too small to keep.
Around 7.00 am I gave up and switched to worms and the bait rod. I wandered out on to Red beach and was amazed to find it really was calm and with a lot less weed around than the week before. I caught a few tiny Whiting and then moved round the corner back towards the mouth of the Passage. As the tide began to run in faster so did the weed. Then the two local dolphins arrived and followed me backwards and forwards along the beach. I expect they were eating all the decent fish or that’s my excuse. So I gave up mid morning with no keepers from the worms and headed back to Brisbane.
