    v4 johno again

ok guys took boat into a marine shop 1st they pulled leg off said they had never seen so much sand advised me to lift block flush sand out of block i have already done head and water jacket how much is involved in that ? my motor runs very sweetly [minus sand] so was surprised with comp; test 120 125 135 150 now thats what i call a spread when i asked what the compression was there mech; said good that doesnt sound good to me ? then again i've run a johno with less than 120 for 5 yrs the dry plug is electrical they think crook spark lead i have some doubts on this anyway if not then coil or blackbox seals on ptt need doing they quoted $100 its been like it from the get go looses teaspoon full a month my taco has a broken wire in loom which they are going to find this is first time motor has seen the doctor they have checked it right out they have one for sale [same motor ] pretty ugly looking with no remotes for $1500 i saw the motor thought i might get it for $200 for parts they laughted cheers

Wayne it's real good you have got to this stage, your compression shows a spread that can be typical of stuck rings, do you get up to 5800 WOT? A dedicated decarbon when it is going again will probably make the numbers flatten out a bit.

The 150psi, well, need to wait and see about that one -not a typo? although certainly not impossible -which one was the dry cylinder?. They are all still high so the engine is not strictly sick but it does raise an eyebrow for the future.

I suspect they are talking about sand being in the lower most portion of the block where it drains away though small holes into an adaptor plate that will also hold sand before the water drains away again into the lower leg and muffler.
Pulling this can be a right royal pain, if you do decide to get it done IMO pay them unless you have a block and tackle and are prepared for the time and extra costs you may find.

Leaking ram, sooner or later the unit will cavitate and need to be topped up, leave it till last IMO.

Your problem cylinder sounds more reasonable as an electrical fault - go with that first IMO.

You are at the crossroads where lots of people try and sell their still good looking motor for $4000 and will probably take $3200 but the new owner didn't count on the possible $2000 or sometimes $4000 to bring it back to 'as best described'.

    good luck

    cheers fnq

Hi Wayne, yep you have done good so far with out question.

Interesting spread of comps there, seeing as you have had the head of several times, Well then FNQ, would be right in assuming the rings are stuck and need a De-carb. What happens is carbon builds up under the rings and pushes them out and of course it won't be even, so there maybe some missing contact between rings and bore. But obviously not a huge gap.

The problem with leaving it like that is a ring getting caught in the ports.
Not a good idea at all.

So I would probably cheat a bit here, get a compression gauge and a can of carby clean.

Start your motor first, warm it up and let the oil get up there, Take your plugs out and spray the carby clean in there. try and use the tube to get to the out side of the pistons make them pretty wet. Do all the pots, then turn the motor over 3 or 4 turns, then hit it again with carby clean.

Turn her over again put the plugs back in and start her up straight away (don't let carby clean soak in there long it will wash all the oil out of your bores)

Then run the motor out in the wide blue would be better, to get some heat and rev's in to her, and also to re Oil her up.

If you have a bad spark lead check it's resistance with a multi meter, I think they should read around 20,000 Ohm's, been a long time since I played with them.

Look on the bright side you have discovered a way to remove salt in your motor with all that sand, Just need something to remove sand now.

wilco picked boat up this arvo they got all sand out they could then rec;that i do nothing else as it would clear it self overtime they thought dry plug [which is the 150 pot ] was a crook lead but i doubt that as the the conection on plug half was brown which surgests water but they were firm if it is water leave it as there is not enough to bother with boss listened to motor said it sounded great so what was i looking for my remote controls was a broken cable taco the plug is crook that goes into remote box [will direct wire it ] very happy with the firm they rang me to consult couple times happy friendy outfit i will return to harvey bay
