Only one keeper but plenty of action.
Arrived at the reef for 9.30 am (bloody school run!) and once there, put the Watersnake to good use to find my spot.........rather chuffed with it as it pushed us along nicely.
Two rods a piece for me and the deckie all spooled with 8lb mono to 30lb leader. We each put out a float..............mine with 3 gang 6'0's baited with full pilly and the deckie with similar 4'0s and half a pilly. My other rod was fished weightless with 2 gang 4'0 baited with large fresh herring, and the deckie's was 2 gang 2'0's baited with pilly pieces.
We fished in 10ft of water initially with the baits set 5ft under the float.
Had a steady stream of fish throughout the day with a mad hour when we were hit by a school of slender dog shark. I didn't know what we were into when the deckie caught the first one............they tail walked..........somersaulted.........did everything a thresher or mako would do. They were all approx the same size at around 60 cm and good fun despite the bust offs. At one stage 3 rods went off together and all 3 were bust offs.
They were balling up bait just behind the boat and we managed to pull 3 schoolies at the same time as the shark but they were just undersized as were most of the fish for the day.........frustrating when they're only just under.
We never had to move all day as the fish were coming steadily and we kept hoping for the one keeper which the deckie got, just as we were about to pack in. Even when the tide turned we held our spot as the wind kept us on mark although we had to fish out of the front of the tinny when the floaters went backwards
Surprisingly, we had plenty of squire that like the shark, were all around the same size going between 32 and 34 and most of these fell to the deckie and her pilly pieces. The herring took only one fish all day whereas normally it outfishes the pillies.
Boated tally for 4 hrs fishing:
9 shark, 12 squire, 2 sweetlip, 3 schoolies, 3 cod, 1 34cm Tarwhine (diseased), 2 moses.
2 of the cod and one of the squire were pulled on a 4'' chatreuse shad that I cast out and worked when the other rods were quiet.
Not much for the pan but a fun day nevertheless.
