    Fun Day at Redcliffe Reefs

Only one keeper but plenty of action.

Arrived at the reef for 9.30 am (bloody school run!) and once there, put the Watersnake to good use to find my spot.........rather chuffed with it as it pushed us along nicely.

Two rods a piece for me and the deckie all spooled with 8lb mono to 30lb leader. We each put out a float..............mine with 3 gang 6'0's baited with full pilly and the deckie with similar 4'0s and half a pilly. My other rod was fished weightless with 2 gang 4'0 baited with large fresh herring, and the deckie's was 2 gang 2'0's baited with pilly pieces.

We fished in 10ft of water initially with the baits set 5ft under the float.

Had a steady stream of fish throughout the day with a mad hour when we were hit by a school of slender dog shark. I didn't know what we were into when the deckie caught the first one............they tail walked..........somersaulted.........did everything a thresher or mako would do. They were all approx the same size at around 60 cm and good fun despite the bust offs. At one stage 3 rods went off together and all 3 were bust offs.

They were balling up bait just behind the boat and we managed to pull 3 schoolies at the same time as the shark but they were just undersized as were most of the fish for the day.........frustrating when they're only just under.

We never had to move all day as the fish were coming steadily and we kept hoping for the one keeper which the deckie got, just as we were about to pack in. Even when the tide turned we held our spot as the wind kept us on mark although we had to fish out of the front of the tinny when the floaters went backwards

Surprisingly, we had plenty of squire that like the shark, were all around the same size going between 32 and 34 and most of these fell to the deckie and her pilly pieces. The herring took only one fish all day whereas normally it outfishes the pillies.

Boated tally for 4 hrs fishing:

    9 shark, 12 squire, 2 sweetlip, 3 schoolies, 3 cod, 1 34cm Tarwhine (diseased), 2 moses.

2 of the cod and one of the squire were pulled on a 4'' chatreuse shad that I cast out and worked when the other rods were quiet.

Not much for the pan but a fun day nevertheless.

Well done, and next time try a white bait on 2 ganged no 1 hooks with no weight or just a split shot, best squire bait around.

Thanks mate.........me and the deckie hadn't been out alone for about 2 month, it was nice to touch base without the kids

Duh! Forgot Yep..........one shovelly............have to maintain the reputation Brent I suppose because the deckie caught it........and it was foulhooked, my Verminator brain dismissed it

Yeah, cheers mate. If I was in the Pine, it'd be my choice for bream but off Redcliffe the small Tarwhine seem to get there before the squire.

Dunno if others have found this, but I would've thought that fishing shallow redcliffe would've demanded smaller baits and lighter tackle, but the fish on that reef seem to prefer bigger offerings............Maybe I'm a bit stuck in what has caught for me before but for example, I've never hooked up on a 3'' placcie but have caught a few on a 4''. Anyone with similar experience, or can help me out here?

Half your luck Kev. I went out in front of Woody Point at first light this morning to try for squire but the wind was blowing about 15knots at 5.30am and after bouncing around at anchor for about an hour without a touch I gave up and went up the Pine. Netted some poddy mullet and live-baited for about 3 hours for 2 catfish. I've had better days

Freeeeedom and Brandon............Gave the pine a go on Friday for 3 catties and 2 undersize cod...........at least the deckie has got a feed

The wind was all over the place and no matter where I went, there was wind............and bloody skiers and jet skiers...........seemed it was everyman's ADO on Friday..........looks like Fridays will be out in future as well as Saturdays and Sundays. Trying to work placcies on yer own, when those buggers are going past is a nightmare and the erosion over the last year is amazing considering the lack of rain.........it can only be down to the increased traffic since they put the pontoons in.
