Just to add, what would be the best size of hook to chase schoolies on a beach with a worm bait?

It has to be a bit of a compromise because of the size of the fish you are chasing and the size of the bait you have to thread onto the hook and on up the line. Also, because so many fish love worms you are likely to catch bream, tarwhine, various reefies (if you're fishing near rocks) and even flathead and whiting. About the only fish that generally won't have a go at a worm is tailor, and I have seen one taken on a worm bait. Therefore I would use a long shank hook around the 1/0 or 2/0 size. This is strong enough to land even large jew if you take your time with them. I once caught a 15kg jew at night in the Tweed River on a yabby and a number 2 long shank hook while fishing for whiting. The hook was nearly straightened but it held long enough for me to boat the fish

The largest long shank i have is size 1, but i also have many 4200 in 3/0 and 4/0, i might get a small packet on 2/0 longshanks.
About tailor, breifly, my first 2 and best tailor i've caught were on Beach worm when chasing dart and bream.
But thanks for the advice and i'm looking foward to having a go at these beauties.

I fish for jews all the time off the rocks at Hastings Point with hard bodies and do alright. I went down on friday morning and got a schoolie around the 5kg mark and droped an other 5.
Where Is Hastings point?
Hasting is in the top end of God's country!
Hastings Point is about 15km south of the Qld/NSW boarder

3/0 to 5/0 suicides are pretty good for beach/rock schoolies ...... you just gotta be able to catch those big snakes on the low tide mark that can be threaded up & over the eye of a hook that size.
Make sure you've got plenty of line on that reel, mega rays love a good feed of wormies!!!!!

i've got about 450 meters of 15 lb line
or i can use 300m of 20 lb line.
I certainly know about those brown doormats, they suck onto a worm pretty pretty quickly.

ausiefool, I know those rocks well. My dad started me on tailor about 1977 on that beach, at Maggie's hole as we used to know it. Neat set of rocks there hey.
What kind of lure you use for the jew? It's a great thing to see a row of blokes hitting them into the night air in the surfy rocks. Kinda advenutre hero stuff. It's a wonder it never features on movies.

At the moment there is not a great deal of them around as Hastings is sanded up but is at long last starting to clean outhey Aussiefool,

The one on friday was the first one that I have landed since last Easter.At Hastings I have found that I get them all year round on any tide and on any moon, just got to riggle the lure past their noses at just the right speed ,just at the right depth and at the right time
