What's the best way to fish Salmon?

I'm a beginner of fishing in AUS, the experience is totally different between fishing in Asia & Europe, and I haven't fishing Salmon before. Yesterday, when I identify a group of AUS Salmmon back to inshore, I use white bait to fish them but only get fresh air, a local beside me use green soft plastic get a quite big one about 10g. I wanna ask every experienced angler to teach me fish Salmon in AUS. I have some question like:

    1. What kind of Rod is better to use at rock & beach Fishing? How long is fine?
    2. What kind of bait is good work at Salmon, tailor & snapper?(seems the Soft plastic works quite well)
    3. when is the best time to fish in AUS inshore?

THX every mates to answer my Q.

Fishing off rocks with big strips of mullet on 5/0 hooks attached to main line with at least 30lb nylon leader.

    Have fun

Gotta agree with kev, the mullet strip is a go'er.
Had plenty of success chasing blue salmon in Cairns with mullet strips.

I use 3/0 hooks though and also had a few nice bluey's go through 30lb line in about 30 seconds once they are on (lips like fine grade sandpaper); make sure that you check your leader after every fish and replace it if their mouth has caused any abrasion.
    Regards,

for rock and beach fishing get yourself a 12" rod at least, in a 6 to 8 wrap, 6 is better for tailor, trevally, but 8 wrap will get you a better cast distance. Match it with a 600 or 650 alvey and you'll be away. threadlines work as well, personal preference as always. Salmon will eat most anything, strip baits and pillies are always reliable.

Best time is always sunrise and sunset, and/or high tide

where are you located? Best thing for you to do is go to your local tackle store and ask them, they should be able to kit you out and give you good advice.

Wollongong? OK, different type of salmon and quite a different technique from what the guys are talking about. They are talking about blue salmon, which is a big fish from North Queensland.

For the Aus Salmon from down south, try spinning with small (10-20g) silver slugs try raiders or halco streakers. The technique I found was quite good was go for a slowish retrieve and then pause for a second then crank it again. It seems to make them strike at the lure.

If you end up down our way then the only way to catch them is with very light tackle...fishfarm pellet in the curve of the hook then squeeze close with a pair of pliers....with a tiny ball sinker ...on the bottom of the rig....we do catch them on lures and bait ..but this is very rare...because they are all escaped fish farm fish...they often loose up to 100 000 4-6 kg salmon....in our harbour...,most of the fish just die through starvation...because they have been fed pellets from day dot.

I'm back now, I asked our local tackle store and been suggested to use 10 g white soft plastic of Berkley. Hooked two tailor (7g and 9g). The AUS salmon haven't back to the rock I fished. Thx for every one. I will continue to try it recently. Seems white plastic is work well on tailor.

Re: What's the best way to fish Salmon?

    hey

Plastics tend to get ripped to shreds by tailor, as i have been told by numerous people. As the guys said, flesh and strip baits. But also try them on a floater rig for some tailor. Also try squid for the snapper.
You need quite a heavy slug, for casting distance to reach the good tailor.
