fishing/camping fees

My dilemna is that whilst my wife and I both enjoy bush type camping, she is more than content to read or knit whilst I fish.
Could I please get some feedback on what sort of camping/fishing fees are reasonable for private river/lake locations.
A spot we were recently contemplating quoted $10/head camping, (no facilities) plus $10/head fishing which at $30/day for us was more than we could really afford.
Does this sound like the normal going rates?

Most van parks are 20 to $25 a head for a powered site for 2. Cabins start around $55 for 2. These are of course dams etc where fishing is either free, or small cost permit.

If you want privacy, you can pay to stay on someones place, find someone generous enough to let you camp for free, or look into other alternatives like stock routes along waterways etc where you can camp for nothing, and unlikely to see anyone else.

Caveman. The place was on the Namoi River near Manila.
We usually look for river reserves etc. where we can free camp and I can walk along looking for decent holes etc.

I can understand property owners concern about liability issues etc., and we dont mind having to spend a reasonable amount on fees. But with fuel cost in getting there plus living on the age pension, the budget has to be kept under control!

Hi there,

there are some books around which provide advice on free camping sites and if you happen to know someone who owns a motor home and belongs to the motor home assn web site they could give you a logon to the site which has all free camp sites listed.

I'm a poor person, being on a disability pension, so maybe I'm seeing things from a desperate position; but I reckon camping fees are way out of hand.

Caveman. I have to say that in a sense I am both.
My early fishing was for trout in Victoria, not the best eating fish but the battle sometimes needed to get to the spot, the stalking of the fish, just being in that environment (fly fishing) more than justified releasing pretty well all fish caught.

These days my fishing is confined to natives (NSW & QLD.) and a couple of yellowbelly of about a kg. or a cod around the 4kg. mark is all we ever need to keep. Anything larger (or more of them) is returned to the water to fight another day. I am certainly not a trophy fisherman.

What does get me going is the person who takes (for instance) a 3-4gk yellowbelly (often a female full of roe) then complains how poor it was to eat (too fatty/muddy etc.)

That person can be assured of an earful from me!
