    Secret Catfish Spot

    G'day patient fellow anglers,

In the past couple of months I've attempted to rekindle my once brightly burning love of fishing. It's been a bit hard with 4 kids, work and trying not to upset the missus. So I dusted off the sicstick and abu 6500 and have tried to explore the local area a bit more. Yet everytime I've ventured out has resulted in me returning home with my head down and my wife asking me if I caught any fish. Yet despite the poor form I've been having, out I go again. It's at this point I would like to blame all those who fish around the Brisbane river and who post pictures of themselves holding cardboard cutouts of quality fish for giving me a false hope!

Anyway, last week I decided I wasn't putting enough effort into exploring some of the creeks and headed a bit upstream of the Bulimba Aquarium passage. After some driving, sneaking through holes in fences, plenty of walking, having a small brown snake slither between my feet, flicking of lures, I came across a likely looking spot. About 10 metres out from the shore were a couple of dead trees that looked as though they would hold a couple of my red friends. Out comes the gold tilsan, my hopes are high and my chin is up, so I start casting ...and casting, then I'm on! The line speedily makes it's way towards some snags and I start getting excited but to my dismay it was a catfish just behaving like a jack. More casts ... nothing. Change of lure time and after about 4 casts I'm on again. Like before, straight towards the snags. Not quite as excited but having fun nonetheless and hoping to see a flash of red. But alas, up comes a catfish (which was remarkably similar in size to the previous one). . More casting with no result and it's change of lure time. Like a broken record, I'm on, towards snag, catfish and guess what? It's the same size as the previous two. Either the fish wasn't catching on (excuse the pun) that something was up, or it felt sorry for me.

It might be time to search somewhere else and let others discover the joys of catching Bulimba Aquarium passage catfish.

I've posted a pic of the offending fish. I apologise that you can't see the truly magnifent colours of the catfish but I used my mobile phone....and yes he was released back in to the water!

g/day mate, those last couple of storms and that bit of fresh has certainly fired up the vermin. Fished the river last wed. arvo a little further up than my normal outings and believe i had my first encounter with a threadfin but didn't get it to the boat ,lost at one its violent head shakes and then as the tide slowed all i got was bloody catfish . One after another while i still had the thought of having an encounter with one of these salmon. determined to have a successfull result with a threadfin very soon. Thanks matt for comfirming what i think i hooked.

Cut off is spines and stick a hook in his back and send back out. They make a great bait for the bull sharks in the river, and also go well in the crab pots.
