Hi all fellow Ausfishers myself and a few guys I've meet through this site will be heading over to Moreton Island next weekend to hopefully grab a few of these Macs that are currently running rampant, whilst there we would like to have a go at catching a few fresh squid,Ive been told that we can get them all year round over that way so my questions are .
1 Is that correct
2 whats the best time
3 where abouts should we try for them.
I have all the gear for catching them in the middle of winter off of the Shornecliff pier ie:poles ,jigs and chem lights is there anything else I should have for this venture, thanks in advance ,Snas

finally something that i can answer with complete confidence.
You can catch along the inside of the island all the way up and down the inside of the island, 2-4 meters of water is generally the best area.
Just cruise along the island looking for any patches of weed on the bottom, careful of turtles and dugongs seen many of them there.
Just use normal squid jigs, as light as you can go. Once u find the weed and are set up, drop the jig down to the bottom and just let the current carry the boat and give the jig motion. I find thats the most efficient way to get them compared to actually jigging it.
Secret spot, don't mind giving away now as don't tend to do much squiding any more, where the old gun turrets are on the beach, out from their, cant remember how far up the island they are but Ive got it stuck in my head that they aren't to far down the island from tangalooma.
One more thing, sometimes the weed just isn't there, not sure why, maybe because of storms or something, if it not there not much show of getting any as they use the weed for protection.
Hopefully answers your question
Squid are generally night feeders, and I havent heard of any-one saying they,ve use fluro die on there squid jigs. I used it years ago, and it worked a charm. Glo bait I think was the name. Just to change the subject, I used this on yellowtail when livebaiting at night for jewies, and I just squirted some on its head. But today with all the new rules, its probably banned?

hey i live down in adelaide and what they do down here is, tease them in with a tommy just tied to the line. u could use a herring or a pilly just cast it out and let it sit for about 30sec to 1min then wind it in firly slow but not really slow. when u do this dont use a sinker just a swivelu will feel them tugging when u get them close have a little feed while u are getting the long landing net in the water. u should get heaps by using this technique.
hey thanks very much guys for the advice.
Cammy Squidding off the Shorny pier for squid is only productive during the middle of winter, the season just gone was no where near as good as previously, in 2005 if I came home with 30 (thats right 30)it was a quiet night,so if you like hang on to my details and pm me when it gets cold we can head down there for another go at the ink squirters.you will need 2 jumpers a good set of trackie duds and a head warmer.cheers Snas

I squid there every summer after we get catch our fill of mackeral (or none), Jackson 4300 is dead right, I tend to fish with light jigs at the top of the tide on the inner(shallow) side of the weed bed. Bad news is that I was there in late November and there were no weed beds. But if you are going to Moreton I wouldnt leave the jigs at home. Let me know how you go
