    Cobb ovens

    apologies if this has already been covered. But, are they good? the price is a bit breathtaking.And a 2 kg roast ain't gonna leave many leftovers for lunch at work...

    we have had one for a while now and they are good for what they are. just take a little bit of exsperitmenting and a few cold beers.we have camp ovens as well and the cob is just another good tool in the closet.

    Hi

    Cobbs do only allow cooking of small feeds, they dont brown roasts and the heat beads are hard to light. Google Southern Metal Spinners and have a butchers hook at the "Camp Oven Mate" which is used with a gass ring and camp oven. The new 14" model is the way to go.

    Hi Rick,

    We have had one for a while now and at times use it at home rather than the oven. As Luckyone says they take a bit of getting used to, but I like them as they are easy to set up and very little mess to clean up. A roast in an oven bag on a trivet keeps it pretty clean.

    The Camp Oven Mate looks great. How much gas (heat beads) would it use to cook a roast, etc.? I know it's a big ask, but if anyone will know the answer you would.
    Had a mate cook a small pork roast with 6 heat beads in a Cobb. Like to know if COM is more efficient.

    The COM looks like a good idea if theres no wood or no fires allowed. Must get a southern metal spinners camp oven cracked my last cast one going up the Mitchell Plateau. Not real keen on the cobs cost prohibitive and definately no good for my tribe quantity wise.

    Seems we all missed this one. I have been talking to Bill at Southern Metal Spinners regarding a basket for the COM to hold the heatbeads in. It's in the pipeline. With a 12" cast iron camp oven, 9 or 10 heatbeads would be enough.

    A good trick is to go the the kitchen section at Kmart or Big W and get a small oven thermometer and stick it in the oven to see what temp you get. Another trick if cooking a roast and vegies is to remove the lid from the camp oven around half hour to twenty minutes before finishing. This will give a more direct heat on top for browning.

    See the pic below of my little thermometer. It's showing around 180 degrees, a good temp for roasting/baking.

    bought a Cob, it does a nice job, but takes a fair while, and I say that as someone used to Webers on windy days,

    the one I bought has a stainless mesh base. It was reasonably still the day we cooked

    Would welcome any tips or hints

    I've got a cobb, and I love it. I pretty much cook everything on it when I'm camping. Once you're used to starting/using them it's great. I smoke fish in it all the time as well.

    I have a Cobb oven, and quite like it. They are expensive, but I won mine at a fishing comp .

    Pros-pretty much set and forget. Light the beads, have a beer then chuck the food in. Go fishin, done when you return. Also good as a heater in your tent, as I found out one particulary chilly night out bush. They do brown roasts, and if you want to cook faster, chuck in another bead or two. You can move them about while you cook. I regulary use mine at home to do roast chickens for lunches. Start it up outside, then bring it into the kitchen once it is all going. Easy to clean and stow.

    cons-expensive. Does not do big meals. Really needs sides on the roasting dish so you can pile in the vegies. Ideally you would have two so one for the meat, the other for vegies. For the reason you don't do this, refer to begining of paragraph.

    My best use for it is as a reheater. For hard core fishing trips, we are generally to stuffed to cook at the end of the day. Wack on the cobb, put the camp oven over the top and do up a stew. Lid on camp oven, come back hours later, and dinner is served! (this does take some practice to get the number of beads and timing right, so try it at home first).
