Talking Please Help! The kids want to go camping!

    Hello there

I have been lurking in this forum recently due to the persistant and unrelenting begging of the 4 1/2 year old, "Mumma - I want to go camping!!!!" God only knows where she has got this wonderful idea from but now she also has the 2 1/2 year old in on the begging and I am beginning to think that we might have to go.

As we are in the Redland's area, I am thinking maybe North Stradbroke Island for our maiden trip? Not too far from home and I am trying to con Nanna and Cos' into coming (although I think Nanna has the right idea with wanting a cabin! )

Peter has bought a tent and we "appear" to have most of the necessary equipment?!?! Funny that - I think that someone has been shopping in secret!

I have contacted the tourism office at Cleveland and they recommended Amity Point as probably the best child friendly option on North Straddie.

What do you (being seasoned campers) think???

Somewhere with camping spots, amenities and cabins would be perfect and of course somewhere to put the boat in!

    Thanks
    Janine

Not a bad spot for your first time. Plenty of things to do, a ramp, and kid friendly

herm , the first time i took the family camping was at amity point a couple of years ago kids being 5 & 3 was fantastic , the only thing aboutt going to straddie is the barge fees & when you take a boat or trailer its even more scary, since our first attempt at camping at straddie we have found the camping ground at munna point (noosa russell street ) we would probably never go back to amity point, there is something for everybody in the family to do nice beach ,clean ammenities, camp kitchen, boat ramp & close to shops if you want to go to the shops .anyway good luck with the experience & your choice of site .
    cheers shubeej

Have been over to straddy with the outlaws a few times. They used to go for a month before the rest of their kids got too old to want to come. Now the middle child (17yo) goes with his mates.

I aggree with shubeej, don't go to amity point as it is too busy. The outlaws used to camp behind the dunes on the eastern side, can't remember exactly where. The were close enough to ammenities for a shower if needed... BUT... the ammenities become pretty horrible very quickly. Get yourself a popup enclosure from a camping store and dig a hole, it is much cleaner and it becomes a bit of a game with the kids. For a shower all you need is one of those cheap black plastic bags with a shower head, about $25 I think. We go even further, 65 litre black container (half fill and leave in sun for the day) boat bilge pump connected to a hose and shower head running off a car battery. The full kits can cost $150 and up, I think ours cost about $90.

Don't forget the fishing rods, you can do the pippi dance for bait.

just put them in the back yard ,get a neighbour to frighten the crap out of them then they wont want to go again, but on a more serious note wherever you take them, you must watch them with vehicles.especially near water , they have tunnel vision when it comes to water ,and will run straight for it due to their excitement, and watch the amount of sun they get. bob h
