    Shark kill on Bribie

I was reading in the Sunshine Coast daily on Saturday with some disgust. Apparently these guys fishing on Bribie Island have been burleying and catching up to 16 sharks per night, cutting them up and re-using them for burly to catch and kill more sharks. Is this the sort of crap fisherman need right now especially with the green movement having so much sway over the already pathetic and week government? This was a full spread in the paper, I’m sure it won’t be the last we hear about it either.

Sharks aren’t vermin; they are a vital part in the eco system. I’m no tree hugger by any stretch of the imagination but I would like to see fish in the ocean and not in an oceanarium in the near future. I don’t target sharks just to kill; if I should get one then I try release the fish with no harm. These dick heads need a 12/0 stuck in around the spine and feed out as live bait. While they were doing this their were many young kids swimming in the very near vicinity, along with mums and dads. One of these guys doing the catching threatened a guy in front of his young daughter for the large shark that had washed up in front of his child. He wanted it back to keep burling for more sharks. Just wish I was their, things would have been much different.

The only good thing that one could be gathered from this is that hopefully they were shown in a bad light and most people these days would consider this sort of practice to be WRONG! I'm not sure anyone would have cared much a few years back and there were probably alot more people out there who were needlessly slaughtering sharks without anyone knowing.
After reading this report though I am sure there will be a queue of blokes at Bribie wanting to educate these clowns.

    I agree!

Seriously though, not only are these pricks kicking our reputation in the arse, they're ruthlessly killing sharks for no apparent reason! WTF? I really don't understand

Could be members of the Vic Hislop family...

I guess they have to prove there manliness or something...can't believe such ridiculous behaviour would still be occuring.

Sharks are part of the ecosystem, they are not pests...without them our whole fishery would screw up.

    Thats pretty funny Voodoochile78.
Havent heard much from old Vic in a while, not like the old days when in the aftermath of a shark attack he could be relied upon to let us know that sharks enjoy killing people and should be destroyed at all cost.

stu,,,, i dont know what part of the report you were reading but going by the copy i have in front of me right now,,,you couldn't be further from the truth,,,,, the article on page 16,, is approx 12 inches wide x 10 inches deep and has a pic of a grey nurse taking up 90% of the space,,, wording wouldn't be more than 200,,

MORETON ISLAND is were this came from,,, there is NO suggestion that people were swimming anywhere near the fisho,,, and ABSOLUTELY no report of anyone being threatened

part of what you say is true,,, and i'm not going on the defensive,,, but in your initial report you shout loud and clear this is what the greenies love,,,, i disagree,,,, i believe they love hearing reports that have been twisted and told totally out of context to make a mountain out of a mole hill

the shark body was lying on the beach,,, metres away from where there children HAD been swimming that weekend,,

their horror turned to disgust when the fisho asked for the carcass to use as berley,,

the whole report doesn't even mention what type of sharks were being targetted,,,, bull,,, whaler,,,,reef

i'm not trying to throw flack,,,, but as stated,,, when you read the replys thus far,,, people believe what they first see,,,, then make judgements after all the facts are in

Chopa, do you know if the grey nurse was caught by them or was just file footage? If they caught and knowingly killed a grey nurse they can be prosecuted in QLD as they are endangered.

brett,,, file footage only,,, i spoke direct to the reporter who couldn't find a fitting pic other than a grey nurse,,, make it look big n scary for the public,,, the original thread came from ""outside sources"",, which simply means they picked this story up after it had been bashed about a bit

the people who made the complaint were more ""horrified""" to see shark fishing being done on a public beach,,,,thats it,,,,,,,

there was no report on how many of the 16 reported were kept,,,,no report on how this number came about,,, no nothing,,,other than a couple on hols from coolum who ""happened"" across a fisho attempting to catch a shark,,,

i use ""attempting"" as no one actually saw a shark being caught,,, just the fisho's word that he had 16 in number from the night before,,,

makes you wonder where the carcass came from??????????????

bloody fantastic! more bad wraps for sharkos - as if the ranger over there aint hostile enough towards what we do! if the original story is true, then by crikes they need to be stopped. if it's the latter, then i don't believe the public should blame sharkos for a casualty if they cannot prove it. dunno what the bloke said to the kids, but that is totally unwarranted. either way it's not good publicity. ive been tagging large sharks over there for some time now as part of a research program, and am yet to have a (shark) fatality on my hands. the problem lies when the catchers actually beach the shark and leave it high and dry for too long whilst getting photos etc. either way i still cop the odd bit of abuse from lay people, and am accused of attracting them. very poor logic when you consider the fact that being landbased it is impossible to chum the water effectively, and my baits are set quite a way out. ignorance i guess. either way im sick of telling parents to stop their kids from swimming on the channel line over there - it will happen! that's where the danger lies, not a coupla big baits set miles out! there are some absolute monsters that frequent those waters, many over 16ft, and it's only a matter of time.

well said chop, get the facts first so we don't fuel the speculation-hungry tree huggers!

    voodoochille,
although vic does harbour some opinions that are or have been brutal, he does not condone reckless killing of all sharks. yes, the top four (gw, tigers, hammers, and bulls), (which i personally target to tag bar the gw), but no other sea creatures. he doesn't actually target any sharks now, and hasn't for many years. he actually pioneered the movement for the protection of the grey nurses, amongst others. his logic is that all fishes are being extracted, bar the apex predators. agree with it or not, it's his theory, and you have to remember that it was a few generations ago that his culling was at its most - a time when many other consertvationists were doen exactly the same thing back then. he has been telling scientists for decades things that their research is discovering now. like him or hate him, he knows a bucketload more about sharks more than virtually anyone on the planet - mainly because he has been in the field since day one. i know lots will be scoffing at that right now, but it's what i believe, and i'm on the other team!

the problem we have is simple,,,, i picked up on the thread purely due to the b/island connection,,,, having saturday off work due to illness made me go through the paper recycle bag to extract the SCD,,, and i looked through it twice prior to finding the report

if that hadn't been the case,,,, it would have been,,,, lets string the witch up and burn her attitude once more,,,,

without being large,,,, i would have heard if this sort of crap was happening on my home turf prior to the paper printing it,,,, and it wouldnt surprise me to learn that it has happened,,,, but its simply another plug in the armour that as fisho's,,,, we don't care,,,just catch it and kill it

    sad eh,,,,,,,,

oh by the way,,, when i asked the reporter why,,,, he placed his words wisely,,,, they needed a spot to fill,,, and it came prepared,,, its current,,, and has interest

makes me understand why there still beating down the door on young drivers being booked for speeding,, thats been running for a good 2 months now
    can it get any better??????????????,,,,,,,,,,,,,,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgG_TxEPaQE
