Definetly a Slatey. When I worked out of Tweed we would get them up to 8kg.If you ever get fish and chips and the fish is all soggy,it's a pice of Slate bream. They do eat well if bled straight away and put on ice and eaten quickly-No good to freeze.

Re: Fish ID
the first one looks like a sombre sweetlip aka sooty blubberlip, i caught one recently off the rocks. I heard they didn't have a flash food reputation, but in my opinion it tasted fantastic.

Re: Fish ID
they were vermin for us for ages in gladstone harbour chasing tuskies or sweetlip, it got to the point where u knew u had one on before u got it to the surface, not bad eating just nowhere near as good lipper or tuskies.
I remember swearing when i got one about 5kg off southend jetty, people on the jetty watching couldnt believe i had caught such a big fish thought it was crap and gave it away.

Re: Fish ID
I've caught and eaten one, and it was more than ok. Maybe it depends on what they have been eating?
Then again, off Sydney 30++++ years ago, anything that wasn't a snapper, was cr@p/mother-in-law food
