Fish ID
Has anyone ever caught this fish before or know what it is? I called it a jack at first but maybe not. Some sort of sweetlip maybe.

MILF! Mother In Law Fish. or Slatey bream or lots of other names, the mother in law bit gives away it's eating qualities but you could do worse than eat one of these.

Mother in law fish, can safely say i have never heard of that one, are they quite rare. I feel bad now maybe i should have thrown him back . He was caught in runaway bay gold coast on the broadwater at a rock wall.

MILF, slate bream or mowong, If prepared right and looked after they are quite ok to eat.

Definetly a Morwong they're not super common but put up an okay fight on light gear. As for eating some love em alot dont.

There's a prize for those fish in the comp's around hervey bay . So they cant be to bad . They are also known as painted sweetlip !!!! I'll also vouch for there eating quality , there not bad fresh.......

alot of people say the are rubbish to eat, but if they are eaten freah i have found them to be pretty good

We have got a couple in the Brisbane River. I'm pretty sure that's that same fish, looks similar. If so it's deffinately a Morwong/Blubberlip. I have only heard good things about their eating qualities. Though not sure you should have kept it if you didn't know what it was or aware of it's size limits etc. Though I guess you've said you thought it was a Jack .

Also known as "Blackall" and don't hear people what they claimed this fish's not good eating...
One night I invited guest over my place and cooked blackall fillet...They ate and says OOOhhh it's delicious... ....me too...

Hi all, definately a blackall. Live in Hervey Bay and they are everywhere around the local shallow reefs. If bled immediately and put in an ice slurry the eating quality is doubled. Cooked in bread crumbs and butter, delicious

Definately only good for the mother-in-law, i'll never kill another one after making the mistake many years ago !!!
ps according to Grants it is a Brown Sweetlip or Blubberlip Bream, the fish in marty & jojo's post is a Morwong,( Painted Sweetlip, Slate Bream etc or Moke where I come from). Both are commonly called Mother-in-law fish because of their less than top shelf eating qualities although both fight very well on light tackle. In the past I have caught Blubberlips up to about 14 pound in CQ while Barra fishing with live bait and they range from brown through to a deep purple colour.
I will post the relevant pages from Grants when I can find it !
