Thread: Do I need an EPIRB?

Post Do I need an EPIRB?

Hi. I'm wanting to hit the bay (northern areas from Cab Tree Creek) for some macs but I'm unsure if I need an Epirb. I know about the 2klms offshore/outside smooth water rule but I've heard I don't need one when fishing in Moreton Bay. Is this right?

Can somebody please clarify the rule for me?

    Cheers,

    G'day Dorado

The limit at the Nthn end of the bay where you require an EPIRB is a line between Skirmish Point (Bribie) and Combuyuro Point (Moreton).
If you are north of this line and/or more than 2 nautical miles from land, you are required to carry an EPIRB.
The Guide to Recreational Boating & Fishing in Qld handbooks from MSQ, available free from boat yards and chandlers, have the maps for limits in Qld.

    regards
    Steve

    Dorado,

You don't legally have to carry an EPIRB in Moreton Bay. For further clarification go to http://www.msq.qld.gov.au/qt/msq.nsf/index/sps_brisbane

At the bottom of the page are two links to maps showing the EPIRB limits.

As long as you are south of the line between Skirmish Point on Bribie to Comboyuro Point on Moreton Island you'll be sweet.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Yep that site certainly clarifies the point. I do have an epirb actually, but it's expired it's battery and one of the older analog types which are now obsolete I believe. Anyone know what they're worth to replace now?

$399 for the 406mHz digital job

the analogue 121.5 aren't quite obsolete yet, but nearly

might as well start afresh with a full 5 yr lifespan and get the 406

$399. Yikes! that's gonna hurt the back pocket. I haven't been able to find anywhere to get a replacement battery for the one I have so I think I'm gonna need to save up for the 406. Cheers gelsec

dorado...a battery replacement for your old one is at least half the price of the new 406.

So why bother, just bite the bullet and get the new 406
