    Radio reception problem - GX294

I have a 27mhz GME electrophone GX294. The only way I can pick up an incoming signal is to have the squelch on full. This creates lots of static noise when no-one is talking, and when I trim the outboard it squeals like a pig.
From Jumpinpin I can pick up Currumbin VMR on full squelch, but if I turn the knob even a little I canont pick up the boat riht next to me!!
Does anyone have thoughts on how I can fix this?
    Outgoing sound is apparently good.

I am hoping to buy Vertico's vhf radio shortly but I wouldn't mind keeping the 27Meg as well

    Any help appreciated.

    Regards,
    Angus

check the aerail connection on the back of the radio and also check the aerial.
Has the unit always had this problem or has it just started??
Have you a SWR to check output and SWR of the radio??
Just a couple of things to ponder to try and sort out the spot of bother.
    Cheers Scott

    Scott,
I don't know what an SWR is so expect I don't have one

Radio is about 18 mths old and was working well. Not sure when ut ceased, I just noticed one day thatall was quiet on the air.
It occured about 6 months ago. I bought a new genuine GME (AE60) aerial pre xmas but no difference between the original and the new.
I resoldered the coaxial and that has not changed anything either. Is there anything I should know when rewiring the aerial to end plug? Does the outer braid wire have any significance?

    Cheers

Yep, the outer braid has a lot to do with the setup.
Where abouts are you mate?? If your near me (which I reckon is the case as you fish the Pin) we can put some meters on and see what the go is or I have a spare radio you can try and that'll eliminate that aspect.
