Is Old Bait only good for Burley?

Its funny how, a few years ago, a work freind was updating her chest freezer, and asked if I wanted the old one? I carton of beer as payment later, I convinced my wife we needed a chest freezer, mainly because I always came home with unused bait, and there was an increasing amount of resistance growing in the house, because everything started to smell and taste a bit fishy as I was sharing the normal freezer compartment of the fridge. Suffice it to say I won the right to grab the old freezer offered, and start using it as a bait freezer.

    Then three things happened.....

My good wife seemed to enjoy finding specials at the butchers, coming home with whole blade, roasts, hams and an assortment of tupperware containers containing "quick meals" started taking over what had previously been designated the Bait Compartment in the aquired old freezer.

The 2nd thing to happen was my mother decided her new chest freezer of equal size, was too much effort reaching into, and she wanted an upright with a door and shelves. She offered her Chest freezer, which was still under warranty, to us...

So now you would think I had it all sussed? Noop, I have not used bait for the last 3 years.......being a 100% plastics convert. So all the 2nds bait has just been stripped out of the freezer, giving me about 50% more space in there...

It's all in a 50 ltr Esky, still frozen until Bin day on tuesday... Seems a shame to throw it away, if anyone wants it for free, I am sure the old prawns, mullet and chicken gut, a few old pilles, and other stuff I can't recognise would be good burley...

I wonder if anyone else has a big stash of unused frozen baits in the bottom of their houshold freezer? Take it from me, you win a few brownie points cleaning it out every once in a while!!!

nothing better then a freezer that smells fishy, keeps you in touch on those days or weeks when nature turns it on, you just stick your head in the freezer to get a fix

I always keep my prawn shells, bread that's going stale, crab shells and fish frames in the freezer. My wife keeps reminding me of bin night, but I prefer to keep them for burley for the next trip, which is generally only 2 or 3 weeks away. Always leaves a nice open, clean freezer on fishing day.

Umm... I doubt you'll get many takers on your stuff in the esky though.

Good luck trying to find a willing taker for the old bait. That would have to be at least 4-5 years or so old? Any neighbours you don't like? Stick it in their wheelie bin.

You OZ Buggers are a soft bunch aren't ya..... Thats a pretty Cool offer their Scalem, If some one has a grinder and a little bit of "Kiwi can do" attitude you could make yourself up several lots of evil smelling Homebrew berley aka/ ground bait..... As the stuff in your eski is high in Nitrogen the other thing you could do with it is make it into compost.... it will make your plants flourish!!

Good suggestion webby, but I recently converted my fresh water aquarium to salt, so now I have some agressive little damsels and one Nemo in the tank. I am seriously thinking they might take a bait on one of those off days when nature turns it on

Finga, when are you coming over? I'll do the fritters on the grill for you!

Tomsta, Choppa - not a bad idea either - but it's too late for anything to be fertilized in my garden, cause their all dead!! So we planted cactus originally because they thrive on neglect, but now we are happy to have at least something that is still alive and not dependent on watering.

Poodroo, I don't have any issues with any of my neighbours, I am surrounded by good people One of them said he owes me 2 x bottles of rum for looking after his place over the holidays, so that counts him out!! The rest I never hear from, so I wouldn't mind keeping it that way.
