Got the better of me? Dunno if it was the fish or the deckie but she once had a biggy run up the front of the boat. The deckie passed behind me with her line half wrapped round my neck. When I told her to pass it over my head.............she did..........the wrong way I was nearly dragged over the side of the boat but I think I would have been decapitated before I drowned 30lb mono can be pretty sharp with a noah on one end and the deckie on the other..........we didn't talk for days

I was fishing off the Hornibrook Highway a few years ago now. I had four rods spread out leaning on the rails with the drags backed off. While I was up one end of the line changing a bait the farthest rod (a little spin outfit) buckles over and the reel starts screaming. I'm running down the bridge to try and grab it as the fish pulls even harder and the rod starts leaping around despite the drag giving plenty of line. Just as I reach it the fish takes another mighty run and the rod leaps up in the air and over the rail. My fingers just touched the butt of the rod as it disappeared into the water.
I wasn't about to give up just yet. I pulled in another rod - a light bream rod of about 3 metres and rigged a set of 4 ganged 4/0 hooks with a fairly large sinker. Walking up the bridge a bit I cast out diagonally across the line down which the rod had disappeared. I then slowly retrieved the gang hoping to snag the line. On my second cast the line appears. I pulled on the line and the rod appears in the water below me but I couldn't lift it because the drag was giving line under the weight of the rod. I therefore had to pull all the line off the reel before I could get the rod back. When I finally got the rod back and wound all the line back onto the reel I managed to still come up tight on the fish. It was a lovely bream of more than a kilo - must have been the worlds unluckiest fish that day!

A mackeral last weekend off Bustard Heads was brought boatside and I sunk the brand new gaff only to have my hands slip off the end. The fish ran (as you would after being gaffed) and the gaff fell out of the fish and bobbed around beside the boat. Luckily I could reach it. Fish was played back to the boat and once again I sunk the gaff and once again I lost grip of it. This time the fish charged off with the gaff. It fell out of the fish about 20 metres out and bobbed around for about 3 seconds before disappearing into the depths. Now we have no gaff and no net since I decided the net handle was too long and it wouldn't be needed now that we have a new gaff! The unlucky fish was played back to the boat and was successfully tailed into the boat. Must get a new gaff with some EVA grips on it.

fishing was a bit slow on our last trip to the Robinson R. in NT and we were on our way back to camp for a feed when I thought 'Bugger it' and tied on a big purple popper that I used for trevally and queenies. We were trolling along and I was working the popper when a huge fishlaunched out of our wake and nailed the popper. Now we were Barra fishing and this monster was peeling line off my cvx200 millionaire like a submarine. I got down to the mono backing and decided we better give chase, FAST. After a half our fight which included countless near spoolings there was a dirty great Spaniard next to the boat. we didn't have a gaff so the net was deployed which the mack quickly shredded to pieces. I was not gonna lose this fish so it was out with the pacifier and I hauled him into the boat by the tail.
So what I here you saying? This fish was caught fifteen km up river from the mouth of the Robinson R on a popper. Live fibre 6kg rod with 20lb bionic!!!

Re: Toughest fight stories or freakish luck?

Yes and what a fish it was.I started the day in the rain at my favourite Drummer and bream spot casting lightley waited cunji baits for bream and drummer.Got 3 or 4 bream 800 to a kilo things slowed right down as the tide was nearly all the way out.I'm on the rocks mind you .I was about to give it away but as usual 1 more bait.I thru out 15 metres or so in about 3 foot of water .The bait had no time to sink when it was smashed but i missed the hookup on what i thought was a nice groper .Not to deterred i thru out again with only the nipple of the cunji left as this was the only piece i had left its hard to believe but something huge smacked it like it was a fly 30 or so minutes later 27 kilos of jew fish at my feet on 14 pound line on a top shot of 12 a 2 /o hook and that would have to be the most satisfying and freakish catch of my life. But is'nt fishen just the best.
