    Smile Pine River 17th Jan

Decided to go for a fish in the Pine River tonight after work with my partner. We arrived around 7.00pm, with high tide at around 8.30. Spoke to a couple of people who where leaving, but no-one had managed to catch anything apart from stingrays or catfish. Fished off the landings the council had built, for around a hour with only a catfish & stingray accounted for as well. Just as we where thinking about leaving my partner hooked onto something that seemed half decent, when the fish surfaced we where faced with the problem of retrieving it, as the water was about 4ft below the landing. I knew i bought the landing for some reason....lol....., just managed to get it into the net without falling in the drink!! Fished untill the turn of the tide, but the jellyfish where everywhere. A couple of nice fillets for tomorrow nights dinner.

This was Debbie's first decent fish, she is rapt!! It was caught on an old Shimano Signature rod, fitted with a Stradic 2500 reel, spooled with 4kg Platypus line. Bait was a fresh green king prawn, fish went 44cm & weighed 1.2kg.

I wonder why I can't catch a legal Jew in the pine

(sorry people Just having a cry, I haven't even caught one that size yet)..

We really need to get more infomation out there for people to know whats legal and whats not...

I think its very very sad that in all my time fishing in se qld waters i have never caught a jew of any size!!! and dont blame the fishos blame the trawlers, they get or used to get buckets and buckets of small jew that were in feeding on the prawns, when i was a kid and used to fish in macleay river in nsw at times you could get 50 in a deep hole, why isnt there more concern about the scarcity of jewfish?.

Nice little jew...But as BrandonH said its just undersize and should have gone back to grow that extra cm

    cheers tim

    Hi Andrew,

Good to see that the fish are there but not good that it's an undersize one

I hope that you just didn't know that there should have been an extra cm on it (not that that is an excuse); could be an expensive mistake if you get caught one day (gear, transport confiscated and sizable fine)...

I'm sure that we have all done it at some stage, but we all need to be aware of the size limits and practice them from a sustainability point of view.

Other than that good to see the girls getting out and getting some fish though; asides from the size issue, well done!
    Regards,

    Andrew.

HH17L - Change your sig as :- Fish size limits!, What Fish size limits...

    Sad day.

I have been unsure of identified fish before, hence why I carry a pocketsize fish guide, or if in doubt, it goes back. The way you have written your report as FISH and not said JEW makes me feel you were inocent to your catch.

    Lesson learnt?

Hope for better sessions next time.

    Andrew,

You've essentially publicly incriminated your partner and the fisheries have every right to charge her from your post.

To be able to fish you must be aware of the regulations - that's the way it is. Ignorance is not a defence.

Suggest you download a copy of the Saltware rec fishing regulations for QLD waters ASAP at: http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/cps/rde/xc...1_ENA_HTML.htm

    Well said Chief.

You'll know better for next time Andrew and it may be wise to have a read on size limits too. The Mrs should be congratulated for a fine catch. As you have read, most anglers have yet to catch a Jewie.
    Keep up the reports.
