Broken Ignition key for Evinrude

I recently bought a boat with a broken ignition key.

The boat was started via screwdriver in the ignition.

I removed the broken bit of key from the ignition with an improvised tool.

The bit that was broken off in the lock was about 16mm long.

When added to the other bit of key, the total length that goes inside the lock is only about 20 - 22mm long.

Is there a bit missing from my key, or are the old '76 - (yeah I know, its a museum piece - but it was suitably cheap!) keys just very short?

Also, will a normal locksmith have blanks for the OMC keys?

Probably just short. Mt Suzuki be lucky to be 20 mm

My Mariner key is the same, lucky to be 20mm long

As they are never usually a very complex pattern, prob any locksmith be able to help you out.

I'm assuming you cant see a number on it, would try evinrude dealer first.

I had my key break for a 89 Merc and the only locksmith that had the blank to suit was Dibbles at Capalaba....

I tried about 20 beforehand and they were theonly guys that had it onshelf without doing a special order in....

I went to Dibbles this morning with the two halves of my broken key.

The bloke said that they wouldn't be able to cut the key as the original was broken.

I bought two blanks from him, went to Bunnings for a set of needle files, superglued the two broken halves to one of the blanks, and filed down the blank to match the original.

It worked first try.


Who needs locksmiths ?? (apart from supplying blanks)

He even said that he wasn't supposed to sell me the blanks

So if anyone has a similar problem - try my solution.
