$400,000 for freshwater fish fingerling boost
The Queensland Government has announced $400,000 has been allocated to buy fish fingerlings for 29 Queensland freshwater impoundments to enhance fishing for local and visiting anglers.
Primary Industries Minister Henry Palaszczuk said the latest allocation took the total funding raised by the Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIP) scheme for fish stocking since it was introduced in July 2000 to more than $1 million.
"The SIP scheme was proposed by stakeholders and the funds raised by the scheme assist local fish stocking groups to release more fish fingerlings into local impoundments," Mr Palaszczuk said.
The scheme helps local fish stocking groups to release more fish fingerlings in twenty-five impoundments throughout the State. A total of $612,000 had been raised by the scheme in the first two years - 2002-2003 is the third year of the scheme.
"The Government is supporting these stocking groups in their efforts to enhance the freshwater fishing in Queensland. It is not only goods news for local anglers, but a major drawcard for visitors who are keen to enjoy good fishing."
Under the scheme, individuals or a couple can buy an annual permit for $35 or a weekly permit for $7. Fishers aged under 18 years do not require a permit. A 10% discount applies on the annual fee for holders of all entitlement cards.
Permits are available from Australia Post Offices and from several local businesses operating near impoundments participating in the scheme.
The permits can be purchased online at www.dpi.qld.gov.au/shop
