What is the secret to Somerset Dam.

I have not fished freshwater for a while, mostly fished Maroon and Moogerah when I did.

I have been there several times lately and have had no fish.

Trolling, jigging, spinner baits and soft plastics have all failed. I have found plenty of fish under the boat on the lowrance but not on the chew.

Also where is this "pelican point"?

Help and pointers desperately required.

ps I have thoroughly searched Fitzy's Site.

g'day, i was there yesterday and believe me the fishing was hard work. i have been a couple of times lately and the same thing occurs. i've caught a couple on jigged or trolled sliders, trolled smak 16 and spinnerbaits cast to edges. the rumour of fish in the timbers was not evident to me. pelican point apparently is near the mouth of wyangi creek on fitzys somerset map, don't qoute me as right.

There are no big secrets - to a large extent you just have to find a school and be there when it decides to feed.

The other part of the secret is having a good sounder and being able to read when the fish are feeding.

Yesterday was one of those days for a mate and I. We were in the right place at the right time and brained the bass on soft plastics (smoke grey paddle tail Sliders). Six fish in the first six casts! About 40 to 50 for the morning averaging around 46 to 47 cms - quite a few over 50.

The location - the bay to The Spit side of Pelican Point.

On Fitzy's map look at the second arrow coming off Reliable Ridge. The point slightly above and to the right is Pelican. That's what people tell me anyway.

Whatever that bay is called it was good to us yesterday but tomorrow might be a different story

Hi folks,
Been away at Brissy Boat Show for a few days. Just got home from packing up.
IMHO Matuka has summed up Somersault pretty well. A sounder is of paramount importance 90% of the time there & then waiting them out till the dinner bell rings. Some days you can't miss & others they come on for 20 minutes & that's it.
Gotta remember that Somerset is by far THE most heavily fished sweet-water location in Qld. (last QFS survey). The fish there are fairly educated & can be spooked pretty easily at times & they can learn what NOT to eat after a while. If you find fish & can't get a touch, try something totally radical. I've done that a few times up there & occasionally it has payed off big, other times it hasn't.

Pelican Point is that big point directly opposite Wyangi Creek. Don't go full noise in close to it 'cause its pretty shallow in close with some REAL nasty stumps on it. Give it a wide berth as the ridge from it runs out along way towards Red Rock.
Oh heck, where's Red Rock? Its that big red lump that would be on your port side if you were coming OUT of Wyangi Creek. Can't mistake it or miss it.

Hope that helps a bit. I haven't been up there much lately so I can't comment on whats happening right now. I know one of the Ausfish members got a few cracker fish last weekend down the front of the lake on jigs. Possibly worth a try at present.

A guy i know fished there last week(2nd sept) around the area close to the dam wall and caught a 3 kilo yella on a spinnerbait.......Bass were not on the chew.

There were a couple of hundred fish landed last week-end in the Stessl Bass comp, although the fishing was both tough and alittle slow.
