Ban on hook & line in NSW???
Has anyone heard about the proposed ban on hook and line fishing in NSW?
Aparently a proposal has been put forward to ban all hook and line fishing (which would include bait and lure fishing) At this stage it will not go ahead, but no doubt they will keep trying until they get it through. A mate has a draft of the proposal, so I will try to get hold of it and provide some more info, but he seems to think it is a load of crap put together by some loser desk driver who has no idea how the river system works. They are blaming us fishermen for the decline in numbers of all sorts of fish, bird and insect life....wonder how we did that???
If I can find out more I will post it and let you all know, and as soon as I read the proposal, the info will be here.
Bye for now.

Re: Ban on hook & line in NSW???
Do you guys do *any* research before you post? geez... goto google.com and type in "all hook and line fishing " as i just typed.
Its the first link!
to quote:
1.2. Commercial and recreational fishers often make use of various combinations of hooks and lines, and the general banning of hook and line fishing is not warranted or proposed.
But i do understand that bait fishing does "stress" or harm the fish which is why you get alot of comps now that are only for fly and lure.
However, being a FF myself i think its a great idea! You can only catch fish with a fly! woohoo! Wouldn't the average fish then grow in size?
Oh before you say anything about how hard it is to catch fish with a fly, I know a guy who has caught (apparently) 23 species of fish with the one fly[1]....
It boils down to only a matter of practise...

most of the time it is commercial boats that take most fish...but the odd angler or two takes may b one or two fish home if that yet they penalize us

Sorry...don't spend a lot of time on the net....rather be out fishing, but just thought it might be of interest to someone. I will look harder next time, and save you all a couple of keystrokes
I don't take fish, as I cant eat the buggers, being very alergic to them, but still love catching them. They look great in the pan, tho, and smell bloody good!

You sound like my other half Ladaman. If he eats fish, his airway constricts, he can't breathe and he'll keel over.
With regards to not taking fish by hook and line, I hope they give it time to see how some of the new bag limits go. In Qld at least it's been open slather on any fish without a bag limit or, a bag limit which has been too high.
Also as a group we really have to look after the environment a lot more (sorry don't mean to sound like a greenie). I have picked up bags of line, plastic bait bags etc before fishing some spots as the mess has been disgusting.
Have you noticed on the news/current affairs shows the increase of segments on wildlife that has been killed or maimed because of fishing line and plastic bags.(the pelicans were the latest). If we don't clean up our mess (even if you didn't personally dump it), we're all going to end up not being able to fish. Far fetched maybe however the noose just seems to be getting tighter and tighter on us anglers.

Re: Ban on hook & line in NSW???
I'm the same, Fisheasy, my mouth and throat swells up quickly, which is pretty scary, not to mention dangerous. Doesn't take much fish to do it, either, just a little piece barely big enough to taste. I have to get the wife to taste stuff if we go out somewhere, just to check for fish. I carry tablets, but a friend who is a nurse said I really should have an epi-pen, which is injection form, and helps counter-act the reaction.
You are right about the mess in some places...how hard is it to clean up after yourself? The people who leave the mess would be the first ones to complain if they were banned from some of these spots. And who wants to turn up to a great campsite to find it full of empty cans and rotting rubbish? Why give the greenies more ammo!
Better get down off my soapbox before I slip and break something
Take care all, and tight lines!
Dave.

Re: Ban on hook & line in NSW???
Hi Dave, No problem being on the soapbox for something like that. It's just a shame when you see animals on the t.v. wrapped up in line with hooks hanging out of them because it does come back to we anglers, even the ones that are responsible.
I wish the other half could eat fish - we'd save a fortune in food!!!
