Fishing soft plastics?????
??? ??? ???
Gaday all have been fishing plastic's in the salt for long time .
but think im not holding my tongue inthe right place,
when it comes to freshwater.
read lots on the subject, everybody say's use 1/8 1/4 oz jigheads and soforth but the people i see are useing bigger jigheads i dont know what weight but they cast way too far the be small jigheads, and the splash ??
whats the best way to fish soft plastics in a dam ( shallowish water) little weight or heavier????????
any info would be great

Re: Fishing soft plastics?????
Hi C9,
I always try to use as little weight as possible. Rarely under 1/32 but have even used unweighted plastics. If its windy, I'm fishing deep or am looking to work fast/cover country I then up the weight. Using upto & over 1/2 ounce is not uncommon at places like Somerset but almost unheard of at shallow/fringe fisheries like Maroon. As you said alot of folks use 1/8 or 1/4 & those sizes can & do work as most spots.
It all depends upon the location, conditions, the species you're targetting, how deep they are, what they are feeding on, the mood they are in, the way you prefer to work them (technique used?) & even the gear you use.
Cheers,
Fitzy..

Re: Fishing soft plastics?????
need to agree also
as little as you can use, some of the new softie i have been useing and working well on bass and the new squiggie bugs, no need to use any lead at all on a half decent day the weight of the plastic is enoght
if your in a place without too many snags a nice stiff 2/4kg rod spooled with 4/6lb fire line will get you casting those long cast even with light jigs
just remeber it is like all fishing, the fish will get spooked if it picks up the plastic and feels any type of weight
good luck!
