Im new here so please be gentle, to make it worse im a Pom.
But i promise not to winge too much.
Im moving to Brisbane next year and was delighted when i found your website. Im a mad keen freshwater (Coarse)fisherman here in the UK, although the methods and species are very different in both brisbane and the UK.
Can some please post some pictures of some venues you have around the Brisbane area , sorry but i have not had the chance to get used to the place names yet , but im hoping to be living in the south side of brisbane. So if you have any photos to wet my appetite that would be great. Many Thanks in advance. Mal.
the upper Brisbane River can be good with gar, Bream and mullet dominating catches around colleges crossing. There are also Bull sharks there and are quite common. There are also tarpon but reel em in quick before the sharks get them. Further up near the Mt crosby weir there are Australian Bass. i am unaware of the fishing in thebrisbane river near Wivenhoe. I catch my gar mullet and bream with fresh bread on a very small hook as they gar and mullet have small mouths and the bream are mostly very small. The sharks are caught with live baits suspended under a float use a live mullet but if there is none catch a catfish and use that i have no idea about the bass but im sure a spinnerbait might catch one or 2 but private message fitzy he is the freshwater fishing guru on this site
cheers Tom
G'day Mal
Have a look at any articles in the site on Wivenhoe (big W), Somerset and Cressbrook. These are the big freshwater impoundments close to Brissy. Main target is Australian Bass but also hold other species such as yellowbelly.
cheers
Mick
P.S follow the links to Fitzys site, its dedicated to what your asking
For starters, Welcome to the best Recreational Fishing Site in Australia (I'm a little biased ).
Moving to 'Aus' will be the best thing you ever did, but keep the secret to yourself
Plenty of variety in the styles of fishing available over here in 'Convict Land'. Don't think it will be long before you are converted to more exciting styles of Aussie Fishing.
Stay in touch and we'll guide you into the hot locations.
Thanks guys for the warm welcome.. I will check out the places you mention and also Fitzys site.
I have a question.. do you think i should sell all my UK tackle before coming over.. ? Its all coarse fishing style tackle. ie Waggler rods/ Feeder rods and Poles.. you probably dont know what these are like but they are all geared towards NON predatory fish, as far as i can tell most species around Brisbane will be preditory? do you know if this is true or are there some you can sit happly and catch on worm /maggot all day? I may get some funny looks when i start fishing with a 16m carbon pole!! (Will explain this another time.) Cheers. Mal.
G'day Mal
you might be better off holding onto it as we have a small but growing coarse angling faction. Something else that might interest you is the enormous number of carp in some of our waterways, to the point of being a plague where there are annual kill as many as you can comps. It is actually illegal to return a live carp to the water as their such a pest.
Cheers
Mick
G'day Mick,
Yep i know all the problems you have with Carp. Even though i love them, i totally respect australians opinion on how they are pests to your waterways..
Hey maybe i could get a job as a Carp killer.? If anyone knows how to catch em "I do". Are they present in and around Brisbane.?
Im glad that coarse fishing is growing faction, howeve Im not aware of any going around Brisbane? do you? I hope so, its a style that will catch you more freshwater fish than most other styles.. unless they are preditors that is. There's nothing quite like sitting by the river bank waiting for your float to go under with nature around you.
Hi Mr C,
What size carp do you usually catch? Any comparison to ours?
You'll love Australia. Coarse fishing is picking up though there's more coarse fishing anglers in places like Victoria rather than up here in Queensland.
If you love that style of fishing - stick with it. You'll be hard-pressed getting any decent coarse fishing gear in Brisbane!!
However once you get here you'll have to definitely have to check out the other tackle we use here.
Good luck!
Ther was a time when i used to hate Carp too, but over the years in the UK we have leared to love them.
I can tell you Carp in the UK is a big £££ industry.. we have hundreds of commercial waters which are stocked with them. We have to treat them with care. We are only allowed to use carp friendly nets to keep them in to minimize stress and we have limits on the amount of bait we can chuck in and some baits are banned as they are not good for the fish.. In the Uk we have a large number of "Carpers" these are guys who will spend all weekend at the bankside and go for the big guys 30lb+ there is some even bigger than this. The bigger carp have nick names and are treated with care buy placing then on unhooking mats and we have treatment oils to treat any injurys they have, when one of the big boys dies its very upsetting.
Its funny how two places have different opinions on these fish..?
Typicall i fish in a stocked "commercial" lake the fish sizes are "match" size 1lb- 10lb. They put up a great scrap.
I think i will keep my tackle and bring it along with me.. Its a shame that Coarse fishing is not so popular, and also a shame that its not funded to well in oz. Australia didnt even put a team in for the world championships..!! thats a shame.
Im really looking forward to trying lure fishing for them Bass.
Again thanks for the warm welcome and i hope when i finally get to Brisbane we can meet up for a days fishing and a stuby (is that right?). Cheers Mal.
