I caught this in the fresh upper reaches of a Nth QLD river.
There were plenty of these things around and they would often fight for the lure.
What is it?

Great fun on light tackle eh
Regards Tony
I'll have agree with Agnes_jack looks to me a jungle perch, caught i heap when I worked up north a few years ago.
Jungle mate.
BF
JP to me too!
Tim
Think its unanimous. Great fish, in decline south of about Fraser Island. As soon as we build a dam or weir on a river it screws up their spawning migration.

A While ago, I read articles in one of the fishing mags, The dpi were asking if any one had caught jungle perch in the Brisbane River. So can I assume they still present there or was it just general question.
I can not remember the content of the article exactly. Did any one else see this?
Yep, Dr Michael Hutchison was looking for info on any captures in Southern Qld/Northern NSW. Any info would be kept confidential so your spot wouldn't be revealed to the world. They're still around but only just. Last one I heard of caught in the Brissy River was about 8 years ago. He would still be needing this info so if you know of any JP populations/or hear of any captures he'd love to add it to his data base. Any info could well help save these few remaining small pockets of JPs.Originally Posted by Remo

I thought it was a Jungle Perch but , although tthe photo isnt good the mouth looks a bit different to other pics I've seen. However the other markings appear identical. I released all fish so didn't have a sample to look up and compare and the photo took 6 months to get developed.
As for the river.....Barron River near CAirns. Up near the Power Station in and around the running water.
Yes they pull like a girl I used to know.
Thanks for the replies.

I think it was only about a yr ago but that OTHER local fishing mag had a readers pic of a JP caught at Mt Crozby Weir, Very pretty fish mQ
Quinny,
Either didn't hear of that one or dont remember it. I dont read mags very often.
If it was caught at Mt Crosby Weir then they shouldn't be advertising the fact. Its closed waters 200m above & 400m below the new weir & from the old weir 50m below.
I would like to think there's enough left in SEQ for them to recover if we can blow up a few barriers or get adequate fishways for Oz natives.

I was bored today and went for a drive with the kids. We ended up at Mt crosby weir for a look.
I can not see how that fish ladder could ever work. Surely they could come up with something a little better. I would think it would more suited for salmon or trout.
I ended up at colleges crossing for a bit of a flick. I caught what i think is a barred Grunter, has any one got a photo of one that I can compare it to.
It just looked very dark
Thanks Ray
Banded grunter are definately there.
That fish ladder is a total shocker. We've been lobbying for donkeys to get something done, particularly when X Lord Mayor Jim kept spruking about how he was going to clean up the river. The best they did was commision a survey that told us the fishway was unsuitable for Oz natives. Well duh! As if we didn't already know that.
Some uni guys played around with it several years ago & only made it worse, now some fish get half way up & get stuck at the corner hole. Twice last year lungfish had to be removed from the corner hole.
Was just downstream of you at the same time. Was taking my son for his first boat ride at Kookaburra Park. Never took a rod & had tarpon all around the boat at one stage! Damn. The rain was refreshing.
