    recent convert

Hi all, new to the site looks like there's heaps of info. Looking at going to Somerset over easter (along with the rest of SEQ by the sound of it ). Got the map off fitzys' site gives me some good start points. Will be chasing bass and maybe toga. From checkin out other posts I gather that surface lures would suit and a couple of deeper types. Is there a preference for particular make/model and colours? I've heard orange bellys work well? Also taking kids is it worthwhile trying bait off the bank ???and if so what?

    Hi Dave,
Forget the surface lures for Somerset, its a 99% deep water bass & yellowbelly fishery. Good trolling lures to start with are Strikezone Critters in Large & Medium, colors 11, 12 & 14 are my favourites. See http://www.ausfish.com.au/strikezone/critter.htm

At present there are plenty of bass in the main basin and some in the start of the trees (north of Kirkleagh). Spinnerbaits would be the prefered weapon up in the sticks.

Not many saratoga in Somerset as yet. We're still working at getting more in there to help them breed to optimum numbers quicker. They'll all be up in the sticks. Cast spinnerbaits into the edges & work them out not too far under the surface.

    Hope that helps,

    Fitzy,
Thanx for that, I would've been building a huge bicep banging poppers around with minimal results. Do you reckon the kids will get anything on worms off the bank? How would soft plastics compare to spinnerbaits in the woods?

I've seen some info on combining spinnerbaits with soft plastics - best of both worlds? Nothing ventured nothing gained - I'll try anything twice.

You can combine them if you like. I do it alot chasing Murray cod out west, haven't tried the combo alot on the bass tho.

Can use plastics straight-up with good effect. Use a jighead with enough weight to keep you close to the bottom. Plastics will also work ok on the flats & points in the main basin.

For the kids, get some #10 hooks & put them a foot or so under a float for gar. Dont worry if there's not many around, a bit of bread for burley & you should get some hanging around in short order. A bit of worm or peeled prawn works ok for the gar. Should keep the kids entertained for hours. Can throw worms out with a sinker. Might get spangled perch or silver perch from the bank at Kirkleagh.

I'd be ringing Kirkleagh to book a spot. The place is huge but I have seen it booked out on Easter weekends in the past, Bloody skiers!

    Cheers,

    Thanx again,

Sounds just like fishing for gar off the jetties in SA.

Already booked a coupla sites (efficient missus), all the powered sites were gone 3 weeks ago. Should be a good w/end despite the wash.

Dave in case you don't have one you need a Stocked Impoundment for Somerset.

    Re: recent convert

I was planning on getting one at the Kiosk at Kirkleagh when I checked in. My super efficient holder of the purse strings reckons we can do that. Are they paper or plastic these days?

    Re: recent convert

Should be paper in a laminated type folder pocket for the yearly ones now. Weekly I think are just the paper.
