Re: blue algae at atkinson dam
Shouldn't be any blue green in Atkinsons ATM. Not alot of fish in there. Eels, spangled perch & a few saratoga.
I've yet to read/see any positive evidence that blue green algae has any detrimental effects on the eating qualities of fish. They warn against it just in case. Its called the precautionary principle.
Cheers,

but is it even worth fishing there, cos i have to buy that
stupid fishing permit as well.
any idea how much it cost?
and what sorta bait should i use, this will be my first time freshwater fishing. i got some lures and soft plastics, but all for saltwater. i think they should work the same?

Dexx,
That "stupid" permit is what keeps many of our lakes stocked, took us a loooong time to get it in place.
No you dont need one at Atknisons YET. Probably next year.
No hotspots at Atkinsons, you can walk around it in half an hour or across it in 10 minutes.
Castnets are illegal in freshwater, please dont take it with you as I'm fairly sure the fisheries guys will be there on Friday now.
Any bait will catch you a few eels & spanglies.
Hardly worth fishing there if you're after a feed, nothing in there that's really edible. Saratoga for a bit of sport but hardly decent table fare. Wivenhoe is 10km away. Got bass, yellas, forkies, gar, tilapia, spanglies, cod, silvers & redclaw.

Re: blue algae at atkinson dam
saratoga, member of the arowana family. so i'm guessing i'm gonna have to use either live bait or some kind of insect? wouldnt' mind catching one to keep in the tank. beautiful swimming fish...
we're bringing enough food to feed the entire camp site, so fishing will only be for sport and people i'm going with don't fish at all, so it's just abit of fun for them..
thanx for all the advice fitzy!

Re: blue algae at atkinson dam
They can cost the stocking group between $50-100 per fish. They are very expensive but you don't need many to start a breeding population, once the population is up and going a pair can produce 20-50 young per year, those 20-50 can produce several thousand. It needs time though. So until they are settled in and breeding sustainably please don't take any togas home.

Re: blue algae at atkinson dam
well camping trip was a dud
there was nearly no water there at all because of the drought that lasted for 2 years. we were ment to be camping on "waterfront" property, but had to walk about 20 minutes before we got to the edge of the water and didn't even feel like fishing once we got there. just had the feeling of no fish in the area.
still we had a good time, was forced to relax since there was nothing to do. haven't smelt burning wood in awhile so the bon fires were nice.
i wouldn't recommend a fishing trip to lake atkinson for awhile. think we might go to stradbroke next.
and yes fitzy you did tell me so :p
