Re: murray cod lures
size 1 stumpjumpers, spinerbaits r great for casting into rivers and most of the large timber lures.

Re: murray cod lures
Cant go wrong with the stumpjumpers in the biggest size, in saying that i was casting for ages one day with the big stumjumper with no luck, changed to the smallest size one and on the third cast nailed a 23lb cod so sometimes mix it up a bit.
Good Luck

75mm Oar-gee plows are a good lure also, especially in the fluro colours.

Re: murray cod lures
You can buy them from most tackle stores along the Murray for around $13. But if you're short of money you're probably better off sticking with the No2 stumpjumpers as you can buy them cheaper from K-Mart, Big W etc. And you'll be able to use them up around Brisbane as well. Will you be fishing from a boat or casting from the river bank ??? 1/2oz spinnerbaits are good for casting around the snags also and you are less likely to get snagged using them which is handy if you are fishing from the river bank.

Re: murray cod lures
also wat sort or gear do i need. I have a light weight baitcaster spooled with 10 lb line will this be good or will i need some heavier gear which i will see if i can get it for christmas. The baitcaster is a jarvis walker redbone with a jaris walker intruder 1000 reel. It is a cheap one because i got it just to learn how to cast baitcasters.I use the rod for flatties. Do the murray cod hang around submerged timber like barra. What other species live in the murray apart from carp and catties. Sorry about all the questions but i have never fished the murray and am keen to try lures as i mainly fish with bait because of the price of the decent lures and been young and not earning much money
Thanx for the help

Re: murray cod lures
Yeah,Murray cod hang around submerged timber like barra. Don't worry about your rod and reel being cheap, there are plenty of big cod caught on cheap gear. Your 10lb line might be a bit light though, but if you double the last 2 metres up using a bimini twist knot it would be ok for smaller Cod and Yellowbelly. I use 30lb braid. If you like bait fishing, try and get hold of some bardi grubs, cod love them.

Re: murray cod lures
Any lure that you can bounce off the bottom and structure will do the trick. Black or dark coloured lures seem to work well in the upper murray, but not sure about lower. 15-20 lb braided line with a good qual mono leader will give you 'feel' and a little bit of stretch when snagged. If trolling, dont put rod in holder or you will lose more than just the odd lure.

Re: murray cod lures
sure good lures are worth they weight in gold but never underestimate the cheap lures
go to your loacal tackle store and see what cheap lures he/she has in thier bargin bin
a lure is only as good as the cast!
i would conintrate more on the casting all lures will snar the yellows or cods if placed in the right place and twiched just at the right time
do that and you'll see them jumping all over any lure
