    Advice on Fish Finders

I am a bit of a freshwater fly fishing freak who is looking to buy a quality sounder. However as you know they are expensive and so many types etc
All I want it for is to fish lakes and rivers, to identify structure, thermo lines, temperature and fish (obviously)
I already have a Humminbird 250dx, however is very standard.
    Any help would be appreciated...

    Tight lines.

I can highly recommend the Matix series. Recon the 37 is a great unit with the options to upgrade to side view, GPS & weather sense in the one unit.
I've got a Matix 35 up the front of my boat, the 37 has twice the pixels (640 verticals).

Am just trialing the Matrix 97 (color unit). Impressive so far.

All depends on how much you want to spend on a unit.

lowrance x135s are worth looking at also.]

    Cheers,

I've used a few different ones, and it seems I chase the same sort of thing as you.
At the moment, I have a Lowrance X135 with the transducer on the back which is my main unit. Love the clarity and definition it gives. I have a 300TX (Tri beam) also mounted at the back for passengers to watch while trolling. It's not so hot a picking up thermoclines but does show up fish shapes. On the bow electric I have a dual beam transducer hooked up to a Wide Eye. I just use it for tracking the bottom, although Fitz is pretty good at picking up fish on it. Last weekend I used a Humminbird Matrix X35 and I've gotta say it's the best 'bird I've used. It picked up fish holding in a thermocline at 60' at Hinze. I've always gone for the higher end of the range in Lowrance, and believed Humminbird offered the better low end unit, but after using the 35 Matrix I'm convinced that the new model 37 with more pixels will be a good unit. My brother is upgrading from his Lowrance X87 to a Matrix 37. Wait 'til you see what you can do with the GPS kit fitted to the 37 too. It'll be ideal for marking stumps on the flats at Somerset.

Really appreciate it fella's, it seems like the Matrix is the go. However as you know the money factor comes into it, so will have to raid the daughters piggy bank. If you know where I can get the best deals, again it would be appreciated.

    Have a good weekend...

I just got a matrix37 and have used it at somerset and up at boondooma on the weekend. Its awsome. Mates have got 35s and this one kills them for picture. Opted to buy the GPS and its well worth the money especially for markin schools and good drop offs. I bought it at the boat show and paid $615 for the matrix 37 and $150 for the gps receiver from the northside stand. Thought i got a pretty good deal. Was goin to buy a lowrance but they werent goin to bargain so i didnt bother when i could get a gps and fishfinder for not much more. I also like that you can pick beams so you can get a wide view for locatin schools and narrow beam for pickin out certain things.

Ive been running a Humminbird Legend 3005 shallow down the back - and a Matrix 35 on the lecy up front for the last two years - and really love the Legend.I recently changed the head unit over to the new Matrix 37 - the difference is awsome - nearly as good as my Legend - can't work out why they stopped doing the Legends myself ?

Anyway at 640 Vertical pixel count the new Matrix 37 is a pretty impressive unit with plenty of options

    Agree on the Legends,
I got one of the Zercom LPG2000s (same as Legend 3005) after seeing Harros. Was pretty impressed so I got one for the charter boat. I never understood them being discontinued either, however the new Matrix range are great. Used to work at a store that didn't run Humminbirds (beats me why) & was frowned upon if we didnt have Brand X. It's good to be able to run what I want now.

It was Motty ( Matt Mott ) who put me onto the Zercom/Legends and they are an awsome unit.Motty also put me onto the upgraded 37 -and there's not a lot of difference in picture quality when compared with my Legend now.I also like the ultra wide transducer when up the front snealing around in the shallower water

I also use the optional weather sence a bit - another great toy , and somthing else to blame when I ain't catching fish.Ahh the barometer's all wrong

I to was a big fan of the legends. I had a chance a little while a go to purchase one off a mate whos sponsored by humminbird for $700 with full warranty. He had to send it back as they were goin to be discontinued and they were goin to give him a matrix 37 instead. Im kickin my self now for not buyin it. Could of picked a legend 3005 for $900 which was a awsome price to from boat show.
