I can't vouch for Awonga but out of Teemburra, Kinchant and Eungella not a problem. It is rare to get a bad one.

The old story bleed them, keep on good ice, take out the grey line and slap on the bar b que.

    2 other tricks

1 - soak fillets in a bine solution
2 - soak fillets in milk

I have never bothered with either of these and enjoy a good feed of barra from the fresh every now and then.

    Darren,

Thanks for the feed back. Looking forward to trying a fillet or two (if we catch one of course) and will definately take your advice on bleeding the fish and removing the grey line

    Regards

The small ones are ok. Anything over ten kg has a very distinct muddy taste. After being spoilt with saltwater fish I wouldnt bother eating barra out of a dam.

    Fishhead

Took the fillets off a 20kg one a month ago and not one of the 8 guys chewing it had any complaints. You can a bad one every now and then.

    Darren
