Surface bass fishing
Just after some tips on working surface lures for bass, I have heard you cast your lure into the snag and wait wait wait, 10 seconds b4 you twitch lure then wait another ten and repeat. Is this an exageration or is it really true. Also I have found when surface fishing for bream it is a waste of time fishing anywhere unless there is some sort of overhanging shade, is this the case with bass too? pretty much any tips at all in relation to this will be appreciated. Thanks Sean. P.S Lately I have been doing a bit of fishing on my own, If anyone is keen on fishing a creek near Ballina send me a pm, only 1 condition....top top secret !! Do you get Jacks in the fresh water? Do you get Bass in Brackish water or is fresh best? Thanks guys.

Re: Surface bass fishing
Hi Sean
I think it's impossible to set any rule as far as how long you leave it sitting there, but ten seconds would constitute only a short pause. If the fish are hesitant and you have the patience try leaving it for a full minute. Longer, even. But sometimes a pause isn't necessary at all. It just depends what mood they're in.
As for shade I'd suggest it's a pretty good rule of thumb to target it, but again it's impossible to be dogmatic about it. I've caught good bass on surface lures late in the morning in full sun [not many, admittedly] The unpredictability of it all just adds to the appeal!
Jitterbugs and Crazy Crawlers are my favourite lures for the job, and they don't need to be bubbling along at their noisiest to work. In my experience the lure that's paddling along in full stride is the one that's least likely to get hit.
Have fun and just be careful who you tell! Fishing alone might not be ideal, but it's better than dodging crowds.

Re: Surface bass fishing
as mike said their is no real rules for fishing ether bream or bass on the surface
i'v had them hit the lure before it hits the water and then again i'v had a surface lure hit on a rod that i had in the rod holder and the lure just touching the water while i was on another rod (that one had the lure on the water not moveing for at least 15 minutes)
same goes with brackish and full fresh water
their are bass in both all year round and quite often i have caught bass and bream right next to each other and i have no dout the jacks could be their to if in the right spot
one of my best days was a overcast humid day working surface lures over and along the weed beg edges would of got over 30 for 3 hours and best going 48cm to the fork that day and they were all in full sunlight but the fish were in the weed so it does pay to fishh all areas of the river

Gidday Sean
Cannot add much more but my rule of thumb is to wait until the ripples subside from your lure. Then twitch it again.
But make your twitches subtle. A bit of louder action is good every now and again but always go back to subtle twitches
Add as much height as possible to your cast to make your lure go "plop".
My favourite lure is a Hula Popper.

Re: Surface bass fishing
Thanks guys...I always used to get the shits with fwfishermen being so tight lipped, I can sort of understand now though as I have fished one creek twice now and am still yet to see someone else...might keep it in my pocket for a little while...Sean
