    Somerset with the Kids

I,m taking my two young boys 5 & 8 to somerset for a couple of days next week and need a little advice.
The boys don't cast very well so i plan to troll, what sort of speed? should i use my bow mount or out board ? and also for abit of fun we will take our yabby pots, or will they be a waste of time ?
I've never fished Somerset before so a bit of info will be great.

    Hi Mick,

If you are going to troll I find the outboad to be fine, slow is the go. Zig zag across the edge of the old creek beds works well. Also look for fish on the flats and troll lures to the depth they are sitting. Don't know about the yabbing in somerset I have never tryed it. Hope that helps.

    Hi Mick

I was at Somerset last Saturday and trolled up some nice bass. The bass at Somerset tend to stay quite deep so you will need to get yourself some deep diving lures. I was using Smak 19 in the purple and gold colour, these lures if you go with a light 2kg line will dive down to 25ft. I was using mono with about a 2m of vanish leader. Troll nice and slow. Somerset is a big dam, but the bass seem to be holding up up towards the middle between the spit and kirkleigh. Try the area around pelican point adjacent to a landmark called red rock. Used your sounder to locate areas about 18 to 22ft, and if you do hook up mark the spot and work the area around it. Hope this helps.

    G'day Dodgy,
Take the Redclaw pots, they tell me they're great eating, and there are plenty about. I tin of fish flavoured cat food is a mess free bait, just poke a few holes in the can with a screwdriver. Rock Melon/Cantelope also works. Dexter is pretty spot on with the trolling for Bass, but if you want some of those huge yella's, try trolling in shallower water. 8 to 10' with shalow running lures. Hope you have a ball with the young blokes. If you want the kids to have a heap of fun, stop off at Logans Inlet at Wivenhoe and troll around on your electric, you can leave your petrol motor on. While the Forkies aren't much on the table, they are great fun to catch, and the boys will have a ball with double hook-ups on the troll.
