Bloody RedClaw

How do you catch these bloody red claw? I have had 2 trips to Awonga with the opera house traps. Tried all different positions. Deep. Shallow. In between. i was told that spuds are great bait as is dog biscuits. What should I be looking for when setting the traps? How long should I leave in in there.What is really the best bait?

apparently i saw on Rex Hunt one time.
i think they were in 12ft or metres of water just off the edges of weedbanks.

Hi Newby,

I'll try and let you know what works for me.

Mostly redclqw like to hide under things, so anywhere where there is a bit of cover should be fine, particularly logs and such. Bullrushes are great for housing juvenile redclaw (and the sleepy cod that feed on them).

I've generally caught them in shallower water but where I'm from there is no deep water, just rivers. How long you have to leave it in there depends on how abundant they are. I would say though at least half an hour and maybe up to 3-4 or even overnight if you are camping. they are much more active at night and feed mainly just after dusk.

If you want an easy way to bait your traps that works fairly well - grab a cheap small can of cat food or tuna (the real small ones) and poke a few holes in them. Take along a little bit of soft wire and wire them to the top of the inside of the trap. it seems to hold it there better than those stupid little bags.

Fresh roo meat also seems to work pretty well if you can your hands on some but i wouldn't worry about it if you actually have to buy it (i have some friends who are roo shooters). the cans are cheap and easy.

Just remember, make sure you have the taps with the rings in them. I have done tests and know redclaw can get out of them but it's better than getting a big fine or killing some turtles.

BTW, being a redclaw farmer has taught me a thing or two about these little critters.

I find cat food pillies tuna etc great bait. I use old plastic pill bottles or peanut butter bottles in my traps, just cable try the lid to the middle of the pot, drill a lot of holes in the bottle than fill it with your bait and screw it onto the lip, when you need fresh bait just unscrew, reload and screw it back together..

Seen some blokes pulling in heaps using Barra frames for bait at Awoonga in around 10 feet of water.

I use half a raw chicken carcus in rivers and half cooked potatoe in tinaroo

At Lake Samsonvale I've found the best method is to place the pots a metre or two away from the edge of the weed beds in water 3 to 5 metres deep.

All the baits mentioned above seem to work but chicken pieces are a favourite of many of the Permit holders.

The pots do need to be left overnight and some blokes leave them for several days but you should pick them up as soon as possible after opening time in the morning otherwise the Redclaw crawl out during the day.

We caught heaps at Emerald using oranges. I don't know if that's because there are citrus orchards all around, but they always chewed the flesh clean off the skins.
