Thread: what is the best line for an overhead???

what is the best line for an overhead???

I have a calcutta overhead reel and at the moment use Fireline Braid. The only problem with this is that the line is courser and causes it to stick more on the cast, so therefore restricts the casting distance and also restricts using smaller weighted lures etc.

Can anyone suggest what is the best line too use.

    Cheers...

    WB,

I have had a Calcutta 200 since early 2000 and have had Fireline on it since I bought it. The only issues I've ever had with the combination is having braid that was too light (thin). Originally had 4lb fireline on it and was casting small hardbody lures and had trouble casting when there was any wind around. The lure was also too light.

I've progressively stepped up the thickness of the Fireline over the years and now find myself using 20lb Fireline, though I tend to use 12lb or 8lb flurocarbon leader (about 2 meters long). I guess I'm not flicking light/small lures these days with this outfit. I tend to use the baitcaster these days for casting heavier lures/SP's and trolling. Any light luring I use my 6' 6" spinning outfit (4lb Fireline + 8lb flurocarbon leader).

There are lots of braid brands out there. I have used some of Harro's Bionic Braid, which is a little smoother than Fireline. Platapus also do a good one too. I think it's "try and see" deal really. Everyone will have their own favourite.

    Cheers,

    Gigantor

I use Berkley stealth, anything but fireline as it is to stiff. Most non heat fused braids work fine as long as it is softer than fireline.

i have Calcutta 50XT and i have put 8lb Berkley XDS so far it seems ok.
but i have a Pflueger Trion low profile baitcaster, and its had the original berkley Whiplash 20lb on it for about 1year and its great.
i throw jackalls all day and no backlash.
only problem is the new whiplash is crap, too stiff.
ive found if it packs tight on the reel it casts good.
if its loose the line wants to follow the lure too much after the cast. Backlash.
i find the XDS you can cast lite wieghts but not great distances.
    but no backlash.
i throw as little as 1/16oz on a 2kg livefiber B/caster with the Calcutta 50xt with the xds braid.but 15m casts is about it.

IMHO, Bionic Braid (good Aussie product BTW) or Penn Power Braid.

I'll vote for BB for baitcasters. Haven't tried fins yet.

I 've just spooled up a threadline with 10lb fins and i am very impressed with it. I've used squidgey braid as well on both threadlines and overheads with success.
All in All I have to say i think the fins is a ripper.
    cheers, Roo.

I have used 20lb Platil Millenium (Yellow) on a Calcutta 200 and found it excellent for casting all day for barra.
