My First ever Bass - Maroon Dam

Hi Guys, My mate Paul suggested I do something a little different to driving out into Moreton bay chasing Squire & tuna and go with him to Maroon dam on sunday. We got there about 3pm with my boat and fished until after dark. I caught my first ever bass on a berkley 2inch powergrub and was thrilled.

I've got to say that fishing in the dam was extremely laid back and relaxing when the fish were quiet and exciting when, at dusk, the bass started hitting the surface around us.

    I'm definately hooked!

    well done.

it's easy to get hooked on bass fishing, it so exciting when they smash the lure and swim off with it, to hear the drag going off.

Spot on Elephrez, and thanks mate. I'm off to Wivenhoe land-based tomorrow (sunday).

Seahorse: What tips have i got?... I just did like I'd read to do it on here! I reckon you could just read all the posts on this first page of "freshwater chat" and catch a bass... I used6lb fireline, 10bl vanish leader,a 1/16th oz jighead and a Berkley 2 inch powergrub (tournament strength). Easy casts to the shallows and a slow retrieve, varying with shorts lifts and leaving it on the bottom for up to about 10 seconds. It was during one of these pauses that The little fella in my pic took my lure.

Did I stay? No, but there was a big group of ppl camped up on top of one of the hills.

BTW, It absolutely BUCKETED down rain on the home (2 briz) - I felt like I was home (north of Mossman FNQ) - had to slow down and everything

Re: My First ever Bass - Maroon Dam

Hi Elephrez... I was going to the Big W because I was going to have a very "non-boating" person with me but in the end I left her at home with my wife and took my mate fishing with the boat back to Maroon.

I got my second and third Bass, including my first legal one at 41cm. I caught him on a popper at dusk by casting to where I could see him taking food off the surface. that was really cool

I see that you were there in the morning, I got there about 3pm.

Eventually we found a spot with less wind and the wind died just at dusk as the fish came on so it was good in the end.

I found out I'm heading home (to FNQ) at the end of october so look out barra, I've learnt to fish a bit better since spending some time in Briz and on Ausfish!

elphrez.... the super secret, mega- expensive popper! ......... .........

Big W Berkley frenzy. Cost me a whopping $3.25 I was really impressed with it's "blooping" - just a very small action on the rod-tip with braid was greeted with a nice big bloop. I'll be getting a couple more. Take it easy mate,
