    Anyone Getting Any Cod

    Hey Guys

I don't what its like everywhere else but we out on the Namoi river are struggling to get any decent cod. There are stacks of yellas but no big green fish.
Anyway let me know if you are getting some and on what lure/spinner.

    Re: Anyone Getting Any Cod

Sorry i forgot to add, I know its closed cod season but I'm purely catch n release, I heavily enjoycatching cod just out of pure thrill and admiration for the fish. So don't go getting abusive over me asking about cod in closed season because I'm normally the one starting a fight.

    Hey Yellahunter

Yeah there is some good bank access, I'm trying to move into the canoes at the moment o cover more of the river and some of the steeper banks. Its not to bad for catch n release, but you have to get timing right. Because the water is released from keepit dam upstream, the water levels in winter nad non irrigation season get really low, and water clarity is another factor. However in saying that we are getting right on the best time for fishing water isn't to bad and only gonna rise. At the moment good yellas around the 2.5 pound and above are abundant and there have been some massive cod taken in some of the holes, 50 pounders and bigger, biggest i've heard is 79 pound. There are plenty of snags and you know what that means, plenty of cod hidey holes.
If you ever come out in this area let me know and i'll see what i can arrange.

    Gday Teeka,

My mother in Law lives in Gunnedah and whenever we visit from Sydney I try and have a fish in the Namoi. I usually put my kayak in at the weir below Keepit then paddle down river a few kilometres flicking lures.

It's good paddling down river but bloody hard coming back up.

I've caught plenty of golden and silver perch and had a few follows from some nice size Cod but am yet to land one.

We'll be up there in December sometime, should try and catch up for a fish?

    Hey Bazz
Yeah mate that sounds alright. I'm actually a little further downstream then Gunnedah but getting there is no problem, its only about 1 1/2 hours. Let me know a little closer to the time and i will try to get something going. Keepit might even be on the cards.

    Re: Anyone Getting Any Cod

Please try not to catch any cod at the moment
Even though you let them go It can put the females of spawning
If stressed out to much they reabsorbe the eggs and wait untill next season, as far as Im concerned we need all the cod we can get

    Re: Anyone Getting Any Cod

Personaly i leave cod alone at this time of year.
Instead i hunt the goldens and stock up on my cod gear over this period of time.
speaking of getting new cod gear, i was fishing split rock dam on the weekend and somehow managed to snap the tip of my cronarch bait caster rod >-WAS NOT HAPPY.So it looks like i will be doing some over time before cod season opens again.

I don't how much experience you guys have in the cod and yellowbelly catching business, but if try and catch one and the chances are pretty much the same of catching the other, And about the cod spawning thing, i fish with a bloke who worked in a cod hatchery and he has no quarrels with catching them and i strongly say as long as they are dealt with extreme precaution and care and they are released. Anyway each to their own, i'm a strict conservative fisherman, you don't need to argue the cod shortage with me.
