    Caring for big impoundment Barra

Just a few pointers on caring for impoundment Barra...
Had a disappointment a few days ago while trying to release a big faust Barra.... She would not swim away
All care was taken with this fish.... she was left in the net still sitting in the water while hooks removed and waited until camera etc was ready then took a few quick photos and she was back in the water. swam her for aprox 15 mins but no go. Thought we did all the right things with this fish ??? Have only lost a few big fish ever....
A few tips if ya into catch & release....
Never lift them up by the jaws .... even small fish.
If ya use lip grips then suport the rest of the fish.
Use a big net like a enviro net...
If ya nead a photo.... leave fish in the net still in water untill ready... if the fish is going to hit the floor in boat make sure it is cooled down.... as the floor can be 50 to 60 deg 'C in the summer time.
Best bet is... if you have a few photos already and ya don't have to prove anything.... release fish in the water with out even bringing it in.

    Cheers Les

    sad that les,
but it does happen. what did you end up doing with the barra? big one , how big mate?? its a lot of fish to do much with when your probably not really wanting it. i've been in a boat when i've seen one die. we filleted it , 20 kg and gave it away to about a million people as a taste tester. hopefully that way it would get utilised better, rather then being left in the freezer for 12 months, then discarded. Your pointers are spot on. there is a lot to be said about fish handling, and for the inexperienced, big fish are more likely to get damaged as they kick and flop on deck and out of one's grip.

Yeah Johny..... Fish was no monster.... just over a meter 102 cm .We had no ice on boat and by the time we got back it was no good to eat so it was desposed of in a bin.
On the few other cases i gave the fish away and it was put to good use.

    Cheers Les
