Lions Lake Awoonga Comp - Oct 28-30

    G'day,
Long time listener, first time caller here.
Decided to celebrate my new Ausfish membership by winning the Lions Lake Awoonga Comp next weekend with a metre plus barra. Was just wondering who else from Ausfish is going to be flicking some lures around next weekend???
I'll be a lot less confident of winning if "Awoonga" or "A_DIFF_PERSPECTIVE" are involved I may have to reconsider trying to win the comp - especially having never pulled a decent barra out of Awoonga yet, and when they call things under a metre "rats". Awesome fish they've been catching -I've managed decent barra everywhere except Awoonga.
I am the reigning Catfish champion from last year's comp and looking forward to at least defending that if any of you regular Ausfishers are there to claim the barra section instead of me. I will gladly settle for the Mangrove Jack category as well (by catching my first of this summer).
Anyway, back to my original question, anyone going to be there????

I agree with you there on C&R and we have actually released all the barra we have caught from Awoonga, Faust and Monduran over time. Kept a couple from Monduran when we first hooked up there for taste-testing purposes (versus salt-water barra we've caught - no comparison really).
I do enjoy fishing the comps though, good atmosphere and another excuse to go fishing (not that I need one). I definitely help to keep catfish numbers out of the lake as well!!!!! Only sorry won't get to meet you and get some tips on big Awoonga barra (have only managed "rats" so far).

    Hey andrew,

I'll be there, planning on catching the largest cattie. Don't think you'll get away with that small fish you caught last year. It'll be good for a laugh. See you there, we'll catch up there.

the live category in the comp is actually for the smallest legal live barra, not the biggest live barra. No point attempting to bring in a huge barra from 5 miles away only to find there is no live category. And if you intend to take and weigh a large barra for the chance of the biggest fish, i'd personally set youself a reasonable goal as by averages, you will need a fish over 20 kg to win the biggest dead barra category. 22kg plus i'd say, as there are many fish in Awoonga from 15 to 25 kg, no point dragging back a 1m long barra only to find someone has a bigger one unless you had plans to eat it,,,but umm,,,,,,,,the taste is not that flash!
Just incase someone is not sure what size the barra is,,,,,,,110cm or bigger will see the scales tick over 20 odd kg. 100 cm is a common size, say around 15 kg.

Thanks for the input Johnny. My friends and I who are fishing the comp had already set the 1 metre minimum limit for keeping a fish for the comp anyway. Largest one so far has been 97cm (13kg) to date for myself so it's never been a problem!!!!

Cloud_9, Happy-Rock and Sergio - Good luck, I'll see you there - I'll be the one collecting all the prizes....
