    Re: Hinze Dam stocking

Bony Bream were not found in the dam or upper reaches of the Nerang River (although they do occur in the nearby systems) by the DPI prior to the dam being stocked in the early 90s. Therefore they would not issue a permit to introduce them. The Management Committee is bound by the guidelines set out in our permit by QDPI Fisheries and that permit allows for a maximum annual stocking of 120,000 Bass, 50,000 Golden Perch, 50,000 Silver Perch, 1,000 Mary River Cod and 500 Saratoga.
There has since been a recommendation from QDPI that the stocking of Saratoga and Cod be suspended for 2 years to monitor whether those species are reproducing in the impoundment. To date there has been resistance from the department to increase that list to include other species.

Populations of barred grunter seem to have reached a plateau and have not appeared to have adversely impacted on the survival of fingerlings, in fact they have become a food source for stocked fish. Gold/Black striped lipless crank baits work pretty well in there.
