    awoonga 17-19 dec

just got back from a whirlwind roatrip to awoonga. madness it was.just
madness.......was nursing a sore head after a christmas party friday night,
up at 7am saturday, packed car picked up my fishing partner for the trip
Benny and headed off to awoonga.

arrived at 3pm, unbearably hot with large storms brewing, set up camp and
met local legends Trevor, Brad and Dave along with trevs mate Pete. hit
water at 6pm and proceeded to spot X no.1, a place they have called
mcdonalds, as the big fish treat it like a drive through, or so they
    said....... fished till 12.30pm, i didn't get a touch, Trevor got a 105cm
and Benny managed to break his dam hoodoo after 2 fishles trips to faust to
bag himself a 101cm and a little rat. bugger. Brad and Dave managed 6 or so
rats with a few more jump offs. Trev said they'd been hitting this
place regularly averaging half a dozen or more fish over a metre with many
more under that mark, including 10 over a metre last friday night, the night
i was supposed to be there but was sulking coz i had dislocated my knee
    earlier in the week...... typical.

got to bed by 1.30am too tired to set up tent so rolled mattress out under the
big tarp. within half an hour a massive storm hit, tarp leaked and mozzies
were out for my blood. waited for a break in the rain and carried my wet
mattress to the car for an attempt at shuteye.

2 1/2 hours later back on the water for a 5am start, fished the timber where
i got destroyed by some monsters last trip, a bit quiet with benny getting a
67cm job before I managed a 78cm model out of heavy fallen timber off a
point. this thing went crazy, jumping everywhere with benny manning his
video camera as he'd sat down for a rest. Stitched me around some branches
of a fallen tree but i managed to motor over and coax it out of the sticks
and into the net. lure was completely down its gob, head first with rear
treble in its lip, good to see a hungry fish! no more strikes so back to
    camp for some food.

there seemed to be a change in the air, with a massive sou'wester blowing
wipping the main basin into a frenzy. you know what the fishings like in a
westerly, especially a southwesterly..... then Trev took us to spot X no.2.
they call it neanderthal country as the fish are massive and have very
rarely seen a lure. Trev had pulled 105 out the day before i got there.
again i drew a blank with Trevor and his mate Pete managing a few rats. back
to camp for some attempted midday shuteye, we launched again at 5pm for a
quick flick in some close timber for-you guessed it-nothing before meeting
Trev up above unzud gully to set up for the night session. wind abated and
things started to look good with alot of bait splashing and the occasional
boof to be heard, although not a cloud in the sky and the air temp started
to plummet (for summer anyway) when the moon rose the bait went quiet. Pete
chucked on a popper and proceeded to miss a huge fish, and that was that. we
stayed out till midnight again for nothing again. wind kicked in again so
back to camp for a few more hours sleep before up at 5 for a quick morning
session for no fish again before a whirlwind packup and drive home to be
    back at work at 1pm.

the fishing was quieter than we'd hoped, but then again that's why it's
called fishing, not catching. unfortunately i will not meet my new years
resolution of popping my metre+ cherry, I have hooked a few in heavy timber
and have figured out it doesn't matter how much drag you have or how burnt
your thumbs get, a metre+ fish is just that, a damn big fish!! as usual i
was already planning my next trip up there on the drive back home, some
people think i'm mad driving 5hours to go fishing, if that's the case they
had better lock me up now.....
