    BASS FEEDING

How often do bass feed in the winter? Once a week or once a day?

    Re: BASS FEEDING

Bass are still active and feeding in winter. Quite often they will simply move location to warmer water. In the dams especially shallow water in the morning which warms up the first are gun locations and, if an insect hatch has occured at the same spot all the better as it is a sign of food for the baitfish the bass will feed on. Riverine cousins the bass are in spawning mode and can be in extremely aggressive moods but, fishing for these spawning fish does nothing for maintaining there population. C&R of a female will almost always result in her reabsorbing her roe.

    didn't know that one Turley
Me and themisses had a flick in the creek for a few bass on monday. noticed their little tummies seemed empty even though they were very keen to hit a lure. Ended up with 8 fish in 3 hrs of casting to the head and tail of each pool and various snags. lots of fun although the fish were a little lethargic. They didn't appear to have any roe at all. perhaps they were all males. All were fairly small fish
    cheers, Roo.

Good question, would love to know myself, the wife and I went down to the river Anzac day and didnt get a hit, barometer good, temp ok but didnt work,
I have been told that the fish move downstream to the Clarence river to spawn at this time of year and normally you can catch a couple but no good, havent had a chance to try in the night-too cold, too far away from the warmth and fridge Only do catch and release, best was 11 fish in 1 1/2hrs.

IMHO Bass actively hunt / feed at least twice a day, possible more so in winter when the larger (females) put on weight in preparation for spawning. Even tho lake bass cannot breed, they go through the same cycle.
They are also opportunistic feeders. When in ambush mode or passive mode they will eat something if it swims into its zone.

    Cheers,

    Re: BASS FEEDING

I have been bass fishing every day for the last 2 weeks and not so much as a bump. In an area I know that bass are! But then again I'm way down south of Sydney and the temps have been down as low as -3
