Re: Whats The Best Fresh Water Fish?

one fish that hasnt really been talked about much is the fresh water mangrovejack.. although not caught very often will well and truly give you a run for your money when on the of your line.. and in about 5 years maybe another HUGE species to bring the rest of the country to Lake Awoonga..

but for consistanty.. would have to be barra.. the first run.. so much power!!... but this many change in the future..

I think it all depends on the line to fish weight ratio. Blokes keep on about a certain fish will..... blah, blah. However, put into perspective, A 10 lb trout on 3 kilo line is virtually a 1:1 ratio. Similarly, a 25 lb cod on 12 kg line is the same. Then there is the water flow and the amount of weed/ snags to add to the argument and, whether the fish are caught from the bank, or from a tinny.
But then.... I like the big barra and saratoga.
Extract a barra out of the dead trees in Prossy, then you can br pleased with your effort.

60 lbs on 20 lb line from the trees in Prossy

Nice stuff mate! Just shows what 20lb line is capable off, providing you know what you are doing and you got the right gear.

Are you allowed XXXX/Powers cans in coolers down there on the water mate?. . Its all good, we do that on our boat aswell... i mean....

Still for me the Northern Saratoga is the pick. If Northern Saratoga got up to the same size as Barra in impoundments up here, then you wouldnt be chasing Barra - youd be chasing Toga'. Just a great sportfish, look magnificent, taste crap so we all throw them back for them to live - what more could you want?.

I'd have to agree that murray cod are just the best. The thrill when you get it to the surface and see that big mouth. Thats coming from an ex victorian who grew up on the goulburn and murray rivers. Now I'm a queenslander I like to fish Somerset for something different. Snagged myself a 9 1/2 LB yellow belly which was bloody awesome. I also caught lots of trout and would have to say they give you a fair fight. Best eating of all the freshies is the good old REDFIN. Any one agree.

I agree with Waggy the mighty Sooty Grunter is at the top of the freshwater hitlist for me. With there pulling power and determination to get back into the snag. Not bad on the chew either. Secondly would be the Barramundi though out of the fresh there eating quality is poor.

Alaskan trout without a doubt. Failing that, jungle perch.

Tropicaltrout, i think since Jan 31 untill todays date you caught a lot of fish, pitty they never had scales hey. i'd have to agree with Kuhia R and would like to add the best anything fish is the one you land thats more than legal, after all anything else isn't counted.

i think there is nothing like a cooked right, fresh water fillet drapped over my plate with vege's or salad and a couple cooked redclaw drapped over the fillet, then i think whats the poor people eating right now.

    tightlines,
    tail-light.

I think my favorite would be the Eastern Cod. Murry's are good but an Eastern has twice the aggression factor, which is why they were nearly wiped out I think. The areas they take you to chase them (Well offically chasing the bass but hey if an eastern jumps on then OK ) is just spectacular. A very close second would be the Bass from a pound for pound veiw of the fight. Sheer power would be those big Dam barra in the trees. Not many fish make you shake after an encounter but these do it for me.
Eat well, drink in moderation, exercise often and yet you still die anyway!
