Geoff, same as any other lure. Boat is batter, but you can use then from the bank no problem. My son caught his biggest ever bass on a spinnerbait from the bank.
The link gunna provided is a good one, but I think it is important to vary your technique if they are not biting. Sometimes a straight medium to fast retreive works. Generally I start with the technique on the link, but they make it look real easy. Of course, you don't know the detail of the structure under the water as well as they suggest.
If you have access to a swimming pool, that is a great way to try different methods and observe the effect on the lure.

It does'nt matter if you are on a boat or on the land, just find a good snag or tree coming out of the water. Cast the spinnerbait around the snag and let it do the "helicopter drop" then bounce it along the bottom until it is out of the strike zone, then continue until the hit
Good luck

I have caught plenty of bass from the bank useing spinnerbaits.
just cast out and let it hit the bottom and then slow roll it back, if it's too snaggy don't let it hit the bottom.
thanks very much for the link, geeat help will let you how i go. cheers again.

Cast it out and let it sink down slowly! Once it has hit the bottom put the rod tip down low and start retriving it in slow. You can give it a few twitches and pauses. I still haven't caught a Cod on one yet but will soon!![]()
Geoff,
You can also try "burning" it. Cast it out and retrieve it back as fast as possible so that the blades make a wake on the surface and breaks the waters surface every once in a while. We do this a lot over here on water that is very clear or when there is no wind. The faster moving bait gives the fish less time to look at it so it has to react and bite or just miss a meal.

I caught this last Friday on a modified spinner …hopping it of the bottom back to the bank.

I find when i use spinner baits that i catch more fish with a medium to slow retrive and no stops or girks

my best retrieve with spinner baits is DEAD SLOW.cast out and let it settle on a tight line wait a few seconds and start winding and then SLOW DOWN maintain a SLOW steady retrieve just off the bottom by a foot or so. stop winding and wait till the spinner hit's the bottom.more than one second and you are too fast.those blades should be just spinning and at the depth you require,5/8 small blades most of the time in dams from a boat.1/2 small blades from the bank and 3/8 for the rivers.5/8,3/4 one ounce and upwards for trolling.with trolling, speed of the boat combined with correct weight/blade combo and the right drop back =red hot fresh water fishing.
We love fishing for Cod, Yella's, Bass you name it with spinner baits. This pic shows it doesn't matter much what size the spinner bait is. Pic is a small cod that took a spinner bait in a river where we were hoping for a big cod!
I don't believe colour matters much either or the blade type. Each to their own and the fish will decide on the day what they like. I love them cause they are awesome in the timber!
Give it a go. We are about to try them out on Barra to see if they like the taste!![]()
