Hey everyone, went for a paddle up to broken bridge on the weekend as i was told there are a lot of bass there. after about a two hour paddle from kholo bridge, found nothing. Has anyone else fished this area with any luck? if so where abouts did you fish around there and with wat technique? im probably going to be heading up there again this weekend.

I've caught bass just on downstream side of broken bridge & just above it.

I wouldnt say that area is any better or worse than the rest of the river.

It is a nice paddle up there tho.

    Cheers,

Yeah, they love it around there being just downstream from the sewerage plant.

    Louis,

Its the only broken bridge that i know of.. its about a two hour paddle upstream of the kholo bridge.. its just two pieces of concrete sloping in to the river from either side of the bank.

    Thanks for that Metallica.

I'll keep an eye out for it next time I'm up that way. I can't recall every seeing this bridge before.

    Fitzy,

Have they been stocking the river with bass still or have they stopped?

The Brisbane Valley Anglers Fishstocking Association stock the Brisbane River between Wivenhoe and the Mt Crosby wier annually with Bass and Mary River Cod. There were about 26000 bass released early December 2005 and later that month a few thousand cod were released as well. There will be more going in again this year. The only time the river is not stocked is when the fish are not available.

Wow, that's brilliant, I'll be heading down that way to fish a bit in the next few months, such a lovely place for a paddle even if ya don't catch anything.

    G'Day Ray,

The mid & lower Brisbane River actually gets overstocked every time the flood gates at Wivenhoe are openned.
The last time in this happened was in early 2000; there were bass everywhere in the river. These fish quickly lost alot of weight & condition due to insufficient food supplies in the river. 'Twas a killing field in a few places, with starving fish hitting anything that was thrown at them,,, was folks cleaning up at places like Atkinsons Crossing & Old Mt Crosby Weir. There was some fillied sugar bags & inflated egos kicking around as a result.

As mentioned above, The BVA guys stock the section of river below Wivenhoe with bass.

As part of the Mary River cod recovery, MRCs from Gerry Cook hatchery are released each year into this section of river, as well as the Brisbane River above Wivenhoe, the Stanley river above Somerset, Lake Somerset & Lake Wivenhoe. I do not know if the BVA are purchasing MRCs on top of those donated by the MRC recovery program.

    Hope that helps,

    Fitzy..
