On my way home from Rocky going to stop in to Awoonga on the 20, 21 of November to have a go at a barra never caught one or fished a fresh water dam. Read allot about but any info would be grate.

Eg do you need a permit?

    Eg Best place to start

Eg Troll or cast and what lures or sp

Eg best ramp to use as I have heard that water is very low [boat 4.6]

Eg Best time night or day

Eg Many hazards to look out for on the water

Eg 20lb and 30lb braid enough

Thank any help will be much appreciated

AS per Freshwater reports read some of the posts, especially some of the one on camping at Awoonga, will save you some grief.
Good luck and enjoy the fishing.

    Hi there Bountyhunter

I am the female half of SeekingBarradise. Well, where do I start when it comes to Awoonga

My first trip there at Xmas 05 and I managed to land 3 Barra over a metre.

No permit needed up there - but if you want to fish on any other Barra Dams like Monduran you will need it.

No real difference between trolling and casting as both my partner and I have caught fish at Awoonga doing both - even managed to catch a Mangrove Jack and Barra off the bank.

The concrete ramp is fine to use as my partner is currently up there with his brother and we have a 5.2m stessl bass boss which launched with no problem whatsoever.

The dam is low but is still nice and deep through the bay. My partners brother caught a 1.07m barra yesterday - warm day - not sure of water temp - got cut off befroe I got all the info - damn Telstra and their crap service. lol

If you are casting at snags then you need to use some big lb braid as those barra are bast and will snap you off quicker than you can blink. My brother-in-law got spooled by a Barra about 12 months ago up there.
So, I would up the lb on that braid. That is, if you intend on catching fish. If you are trolling it won't matter as much but be prepared for a great fight. But all worth it when you land them.

As for the caravan park - well apparently Awoonga - or should I say Merv - has lived up to his reputation and apparently triple booked a few people - again - and it is a huge comp on this weekend - so if you want some serenity go to Willow Grove Caravan Park at Benaraby - it's only a 10 minute drive to Awoonga but a lot less stress involved.

We have caught Barra on surface poppers, Halco deep divers and squidgies, so that just shows how fickle the Barra are. When we went up there at Easter - we could see the fish sitting under the boat but anything short of scuba diving was not going to get them in the boat. lol

That said you will love the place - it is a great dam to fish - just be prepared for not catching fish - as it is definitely hard work.

    Enjoy your trip.

    All the best.

    Re: First Trip To Awoonga

Hi tdsk thanks for the compliment as we consider a 52cm Impoundment Jack a better catch than a metre Barra as they are few and far between.

It even jumped like a barra several times which was great - it was caught at 10pm at night across from the boat ramp on an Eddy lure which are close to Nilsmasters etc

We just had to go down there and have a cast on our first night at the dam on that trip and ended up with a nice fish.

If you are chasing them at Awoonga = Futter creek has held a few.

    All the best

    cheers seekingbarradise

ps : good fish that would still be a good fish in the saltwater but i don't know about being better than a 1m + barra

I'll be up there from 13th to 19th, so I'll try and do a current "state of the nation" for you the evening of the 19th when I get back!
