Re: What is a good trolling speed?

My preferred speed for trolling for Barra is around 4.8kph. My 150 4 stroke will troll slower than that if I use the troll control on Smart Craft computer. This lets you adjust rpm down to 550 and up to 1000 in 10 rpm increments. Here's one I got last Tuesday arvo at 4.8kph on a Halco 130 Crazy Deep.

What size barra do you catch on Jackalls? I would have thought them to small for a reasonable sized barra to worry about?

I had forgotten and realise that I have had no success with trolling jackalls recently but my troll speed has been 4.5 km/hr or greater.
Ray, BP is the dam this speed works best at! I got a 53cm bass there a few years ago(when there was still water!) that won me the inland fishing comp. I got 8 bass over 50cm that weekend all on the same Jackall and they wouldn't touch it if I was not between 3.5 & 4 km/hr. Motty knows his stuff. When he talks, I listen!

    fascinating posts.

Slow aint necessarily the best for barra at Monduran in the main basin. Well above idle in my 4.3 25hp tinny has produced the goods before

Good tips re picking a speed to suit your lures. And, make sure all the lures in your spread like that speed. Rod tip vibration is a guide, if you haven't let too much line out to dampen the pulses of the lure
