Thread: What is a good trolling speed?

What is a good trolling speed?

G'day I am having trouble with trolling speed for barra. I know slower is better but that means using my electric but I do not want to waste the battery. So then I have to use the outboard. I have a 40hp 4stroke Suzuki and does about 4kmph at the slowest. Was just wanting to know if this is to fast for barra because I have seen people trolling with bigger motors than I've got so they must go the same or faster.

    Thanks matt

Check out the trolling flap from Solas propellors , I think thats who makes them I used to use it on a 50 four stroke Merc that idled at 2.6 knts I think optimum is between 1.4 and 1.8 knts which you can acheive with the flap you just bolt it on the leg of your motor and it folds up at speed but at low revs it slows you motor down so that idle is too slow i think its 0.8 of a knot I think they also sell them from a mail order from Freshwater fishing mag

or just stick the leccy in as your going just look out for timber and don't daydream while trolling the shallows

Good ol bucket on a rope works ok for us. Slows you down quite considerably.

Does anyone know of an Australian supplier of the 'trolling bags' that slow don the boat while trolling. I may end up throwing a couple of buckets out the back but would prefer the trolling bags.

My Yamaha 50 4st idles along at 3.5 to 4km/hr, I've found that's slow enough.

I've found going much slower affects how the lure works (judged by the action of the rod), and the depth of the lure. I first noticed this when travelling into the slight breeze (howling winds) at Awoonga.

I actually pick up speed going into the wind, so the lure depth and action are similar.

Definately noticed that you need to be doing 3.5 to 4k/ph to get the results from jackalls. Any slower or faster and the hits decrease. Barra on the other hand seem to like it as slow as possible, at least that what we found at monduran.

All depends on where your trolling. Deep water you require some kind of depth so bit of speed works. But the shallows we find a troll with the electric about 1-2 km/h works best, just enough to get the lures working. Just depends where you are but most importantly where the fish are???

Interesting that you mentioned that speed for trolling jackalls. I now remember that Matthew Mott (guide at BP Dam) telling us that we should run thinner line (4lb) and troll at about 3.5 km/hr for Jackalls. I had forgotten and realise that I have had no success with trolling jackalls recently but my troll speed has been 4.5 km/hr or greater.

had great success on monduran barra trolling at 2.5 kph by the gps and still picked up most fish trolling into the wind even slower

    Zimbarra , RayB

Witworths or even BCF or any resonable tackle or chandlery shop should stock or at least be able to order a sea anchor in for you.

Thanks every one for your answers I will have to try something. Not much of a trolling fan but if it catches the fish then I will have to. just got back from 4 nights at awonga will post a report soon.

sureley a sea anchor would create too much drag to troll with though. I saw a test where they had a massive power cat going flat out with a sea anchor behind it and it didn't budge an inch.
